Today we’d like to introduce you to Uduak Essien.
Uduak, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The first piece of content I produced was for my fashion blog, while I was still in college. I have always loved fashion, and I had been wanting to create a blog since high school, but I was always too scared to do so. Fast forward a couple of years down the line, I finally made my first post! I realized that once I finally had the ball rolling, it wasn’t as scary as it seemed. What started as me making fashion posts about the best award show outfits on my blog, turned into me styling my outfits, which evolved into makeup unboxings, and that lands me where I am today: creating content on Instagram and YouTube. The content I create for Instagram consists of makeup and fashion. Lately, I have been posting makeup looks, but my feed is a mixture of fashion as well. For YouTube, I create makeup unboxing videos and makeup tutorials. I think going back to the basics is nice for some people who are missing the nostalgic how-to tutorials. I try to create the content that I want to see.
Has it been a smooth road?
As much as I would like to say that this has been a smooth and easy ride the whole time, it hasn’t been. For me, starting my blog and making videos in the first place was one of the hardest things I’ve done. I was so concerned with other people’s opinions, and I held off on doing what I love for so long. Even now, I’ve taken a long hiatus from YouTube due to losing motivation. But, I will be back VERY soon. I know that I have to be consistent and be my own motivation in times like these.
Please tell us about your work.
My brand consists of creating YouTube videos based solely on makeup. I film, edit and produce my videos by myself, which is something I take immense pride in. What sets me apart, is doing my makeup videos for pure fun. I want to grow to be able to be a voice and a face of reference for others, but I also want to enjoy doing it. I chose to focus on makeup because I like to create looks using colors that most people would probably think someone with my complexion should not wear. I don’t do it to defy social norms or anything like that, but I do it because I love it. I like being able to create vibrant, fun looks that make me happy. I hope that I will inspire people in my shade range to realize that we can wear whatever type of makeup we want to without constantly being judged. At the end of the day, it washes all off.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about Dallas is that it has a little bit of everything. You can find many different types of food, late night places, and interesting historical buildings. The thing I dislike is the traffic. Doesn’t matter if you’re going in or out of the city, the highways are always crowded.
