Meet Ursula Oneal of Vanity Culture in Shreveport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ursula Oneal.

Ursula, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Ursula Oneal and I got started in the beauty industry in 2016 when I was working as a makeup artist at the local mall at a beauty counter. I wanted to succeed in the company and become a manager but I quickly saw how corporate America wasn’t for me. I got looked over many times for promotions even though I was meeting all of my sales goals. Once I saw someone get promoted over me who didn’t deserve the position and was fired soon after, I knew then it was time for me to go back to school and step into entrepreneurship.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Shreveport is a small town and we only had one esthetics school to enroll in at the time. One college closed down and the other college was too expensive and I didn’t have the funds to enroll but luckily, I called Pat Goins Beauty school and they had a new program that they were working on for esthetics. It was a pilot program so they were looking to enroll only a couple of people and I was one of them. We struggled a lot in that program because it was new but I told myself I was going to do whatever it takes to graduate and pass my state board test and that’s exactly what I did. I was actually the first graduate and Licensed esthetician that came out of the program. I almost didn’t get back in school because there were many circumstances hindering me from going back but by the grace of God, it all worked out and that’s how I knew this was it.

Please tell us about Vanity Culture.
Working at the beauty counter in the mall is where I found my passion and love for the beauty industry. I love helping women feel good in their own skin and helping them find ways to enhance their natural beauty. I worked part-time and went to school part-time to become a licensed Esthetician. I graduated in 2017 and started working at a local lash and brow bar for a few months to help build my clientele. In less than eight months, I opened my own beauty bar! I have accomplished many achievements since owning my own shop. I am certified in many services. Some people have their niche and specialize in one service but I’m a little different, I actually enjoy switching up and doing different services because I never get bored and it keeps me on my toes.

I specialize in skin care, eyelash extensions, and eyebrow enhancements. I also have my own skincare line. I make natural skincare products as well that I sell out of my beauty bar and online. My turmeric bars and Brightening serum are my best sellers! I have helped many people all over the US clear acne and hyperpigmentation! I have so much more in store for my skincare brand. Because I am very well rounded in this industry, I also teach one on one classes and certified group training to women looking to get started in the beauty industry and don’t know where to go. School only teaches you the basics and I believe having someone knowledgeable with hands-on, real-world experience is the best training you can receive. I just recently launched an online boutique as well and can’t wait to see where my new business venture takes me!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was being in dance line and cheerleading. It was always fun and exciting. I was a competitive kid who was always interested in the arts, whether it was dance, music, beauty or fashion.
