Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Prosser.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in the hair industry at the age of 14. My mom opened her first salon in East Orange, New Jersey. And she made me the receptionist. My job was to meet and greet all the clients. Soon after my mom started grooming me to be her assistant. From that one salon, we generated 12 others in which I help run. At the age of 17 I didn’t think I wanted to do hair anymore but I wasn’t allowed to give up. I wanted to experience other jobs to see what was right for me, needless to say I always ended up and the hair salon with my mother. I move to Texas in 2009 and I worked at smart styles located at the Walmart And Balch Springs, Texas. And from there I moved to Plano Texas and relocated to the smart styles at the Walmart in Plano. I worked there for about six months. I met a girl named Dominique and we became very good friends. We talked about starting her own businesses by way of renting a salon suite. So one day I got a call from Dominique, overwhelmed with excitement about the salon suites she had stumbled upon. They were new and pretty empty. We went to look at the salon suites and we like them so we rented one. Dominique and I shared the salon suite. I owe thanks to my mother, Emma Adams of Le Mothsho Essence Barber and beauty salon and Mr. Norman Malancon of Salons Etc. for giving me my first Business owner opportunity here in Texas. I owe thanks to Dominique Sade Edwards for helping me break into this new world that I love so much
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My mom has always taught me that anything worth having isn’t going to be an easy ride. Every day is a struggle, there are going to be obstacles and challenges but you have to be determined. I opened my first salon suite January 1, 2010 and I am still in business today. I will be opening a second location in Dallas, Texas in June of this year with another friend/business partner Tatiana Francesconi. Tatiana is a brilliant multi- talented artist, who expresses her love for the industry by way of Makeup, Body Painting and Photography
Please tell us about Hairway 2 Heaven Studio.
I am an independent operator and I specialize in healthy hair. I love everything about the beauty industry and I’m here to make my mark in the industry. I think what sets me apart from other salons is showing respect for the client’s time. My mom also taught me that it’s better to have waited on my client than to have my client wait for me. With this being said, I do not overbook. You will not come in my establishment at 7 am and get out of my chair at 7pm because I scheduled ten other clients at the same time. I am known for healthy growing hair, Brazilian Blowouts and Braiding but these are not the only services I offer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think my favorite memory from childhood would be me learning braid my friend’s hair. This is where it started. I then became my mom’s right hand in the salon. I started doing all the braids in her salon.
