Meet Vanditha Mohan of Nrithyarpanam Academy of Performing Arts in Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanditha Mohan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Bharathanatyam is a sacred art form which is globally accepted as one of the most aesthetic dance that has its origin in Tamil Nadu, India. It may look sensational, but it is the truth that I was sidelined by my teachers in dance classes at my young age for they found no semblance of dance movement in me. Their exclusion did not deter me from following my passion. I had my formal training in Bharathanatyam under the tutelage of Guru PadmaShri Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, – A doyen in Bharathnatyam. After the successful completion of a 3 hour long Solo Maiden public performance in 2007 with over 500 spectators and three special guests, I began to scale heights through performances. I started my advanced classes under Guru Shri.S.Shivakumar and Smt.Sailaja Shivakumar -Directors of Shivakalalayam Academy of Indian Performing Arts. Some of my awards include Tamil Nadu Govt award for best dancer by Eyal I sai Nataka Mandram. I bagged the first place in a famous Bharathnatyam competition organized by Jaya Tv were the well-executed choreography was appreciated. I have toured all over India and the United States for dance productions and solo performances.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like anyone-I was no exception to challenges or struggles. I was doing my dentistry and pursuing my passion, which required a lot of time management. There were days where I would finish up seeing patients in clinic and run back for my dance rehearsals, which are usually 3 hours long. My guru and parents encouraged me to keep this going no matter what. With their support, I could do wonders. Dancing opened a lot of opportunities for me and has always given great memories that all the struggle and obstacles that I have gone through nostalgic and forgotten and has given me an opportunity to tell those experience as inspiring stories to my wonderful students.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nrithyarpanam Academy of Performing Arts story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the Artistic Director of Nrithyarpanam Academy of performing Arts- An Institution that emphasizes on the practical and theoretical aspect of Bharathnatyam with a strict focus on quality. This dance school has no age bar- I have students from 3 -45 yrs, All are welcome to join, and I strongly believe that my students are my biggest asset. I am proud to say that my dance and teaching style is unique- I try to impart my guru’s teachings in the best way possible and make classes more fun and creative. It’s our duty to treat our body right by taking in right food and exercise; hence, I start with a warm-up routine and have my students recite a few traditional dance shlokas. Once done – We start from level 1 adavus (Dance steps) which are extremely intense and gradually progress along. I try my best to offer a mix of all important aspects of Bharathnatyam step by step in every class. I am a strong believer of quality and perfection- My students and parents love me for that! Ever proud to say that… winkkk

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Haha! I have been showered with blessings and support – Yes, there have been some bad times, which is the reason I am here because that taught me a lot. I take every bad luck/failure as a learning, and a strong believer of “Things happen for a reason” – This is my mantra. I have nothing to crib about – I have got two hands, legs, nose, eyes, ears, lips – Can I pursue my passion without them? I am thankful and lucky. 🙂
