Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Canizalez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began working in the beauty industry at 19 years old. I started As a makeup artist in Burbank California where I working on commercials and film. Over time I decided I wanted to explore a little deeper than makeup. I wanted to learn how to keep the skin under makeup healthy and glowing. My father always challenged me to be better and try harder than I did the day before. I obtained an estheticians license and after working for several other companies I decided to take a chance on myself and open my own business.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. I knew that starting a company was going to be a lot of work. I sacrificed time with friends, I sacrificed sleep. I was working several jobs at once in the beginning. At the 6 month mark, the building I was renting out of was shutting down. There were a 30-day heads up for all renters. This was a stressful time for me as I did not know where I would end up and spaces in other buildings were filling up extremely quickly.
I would be lying if I said I didn’t Think of shutting down silk waxing during that time. One thing that really kept me going was listening to Eric Thomas’ “how bad do you want it” every morning on the way to work. I kept the faith and trusted my decision to work for myself. A couple of days before everyone was moving out, I found Mitchell st salon suites. It would be more appropriate to say, it found me. I’ve been at Mitchell st for over 2 years now and it’s been a complete blessing.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Silk waxing studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I would say I specialize In Brazilian waxing. As a company, I am Most proud of the relationships I’ve created and kept with clients. It has become more than just a business exchange, it has become friendships. We laugh together, we cry together, we grow together.
I am so grateful that clients allow me to be a part of their lives as they are such a huge part of mine. One thing that sets me apart from other places is that there is a television in my suite. It’s an extra distraction for clients. Keeping things comfortable and as painless as possible are very important to me.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I hope to open a storefront for Silk over the next couple of years. I am Constantly working on new projects and right now I am Preparing to start a nonprofit organization that will be in place to offer assistance to survivors of domestic violence. Hopefully, that is something that Y’all will hear more about within the next year.
