Today we’d like to introduce you to Vee Faye.
Hi Vee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Honestly, I had NO plans of opening a painting studio ever! (lol) A really good friend of mine, Carissa, asked me to lead paint and sip for her Birthday one year and I figured why not. This was the very first Paint Jam that I hosted and it was such an amazing energetic exchange that I thought, “if I could do this all the time, I would… AND I would legitimately love it!” I went on to host a few private Paint Jams following that one and while they were an amazing time, I hadn’t completely worked out the logistics to make it a business that I could grow for a while.
At the time, I was learning screen printing and feeling a little more confident exploring other creative avenues that I enjoyed. Honestly, despite success in other ventures/creative entrepreneurial areas, I could never bring myself to leave Paint Jam Dallas “behind.” So, I sat with my girlfriend, Liz, and posed the question to both her and myself, “How do I make this thing that I enjoy so much an actual business and more bankable than it has been?” She and I went over the losses, profits, and creative priorities (my non-negotiables for the business) and figured out some areas that we could save money on to make my creative must haves more financially sound and things have been steadily growing since then!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth? Not quite! (lol) It has been “tough,” mostly because I am an artist. I care about the quality of the paint and the quality of the images that we paint. I don’t want to only paint sunsets and palm trees. I want paint jammers to be able to create DOPE art. I want them to enjoy being CREATIVE. While we do sketch the canvases prior to Paint Jams, we do not decide what colors or additions Paint Jammers add to their masterpieces. We, and the sketches, are simply there for guidance and insurance that no one leaves with a piece that they are not in love with.
Another major part of Paint Jam Dallas is the backdrop of Jams by some of the best Dj’s that Dallas has to offer, two of our favorites being DJ Byron D and DJ Black on Black. So, we had to figure out a way to provide that for our guests in a way that made sense for a business. I think that the biggest struggle has been working to transition from being a Pop-Up styled business operating PRN to finding and operating a studio that hopes to soon have its doors open at least 5 days a week! (It’s coming soon!)
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
With so many thanks to our community, Paint Jam Dallas has consistently and organically grown so much and we are excited for all of the things that are to come in 2021!
