Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki Baker.
Vicki, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As with any business I started out of necessity. I was in need of a quality satin bonnet but could not find one in the local stores. So, I taught myself how to make one then shared with friends and family which ultimately lead to starting a business providing a much-needed product to the local women in Tarrant county. I started out doing local craft and vendor events.
Upon much request from a customer, I eventually added a website to make it easier for those outside my area to purchase online. I currently travel throughout the state of Texas and Oklahoma selling satin bonnets.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would have to say it has been very smooth because I took my time. I did my research and sought advice before I moved forward with any business decisions. Any obstacles I did experience were minor and a great source of information of what not to do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mattie’s Bonnets – what should we know?
Mattie’s Bonnets specializes in hair accessories that provide protection for all hair types. I make a variety of satin bonnets, satin hair ties aka scrunchies, and headbands. Each product is designed with the softest satin which reduces the potential hair damage from cotton pillowcases and rubber bands that cause breakage.
My proudest moment was when I was interviewed for the Houston Chronicle while vending at Afrolicious. As a crafter, it was validation that I am moving in the right direction. What sets Mattie’s Bonnets apart from others is that I personally make every product and provide a warranty because I believe in the quality of my work.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Providing an affordable, quality handmade satin bonnet and great customer service has been important to my success! I want every woman and girl to have the best products to protect and style their hair.
