Meet Victoria Moran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Moran.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Ever since I was little, I’ve always been interested in anything artsy or hands on. In elementary, I filled a notebook with designs of my “future clothing line” and also decided I wanted to become a hairstylist one day. Jr High was a big interior design phase for me; I’d rearrange my room at least once a week and had magazine cutouts of furniture and home decor I loved. In high school, I was doing ceramics every day and started hair school senior year. Doing some kind of artistic project became a sort of therapy for me. I would let out both my blissfulness and my frustrations into whatever project I was working on.

When I first moved from Salt Lake City to Dallas two years ago, I was more homesick than I thought I would be and knew I needed some type of new hobby to distract me. I’d always been interested in photography so I thought learning more about it would be a perfect distraction. I started watching YouTube videos and read articles online on different photography styles, how to use different types of cameras, how to use Lightroom, etc.

Eventually, I decided to combine my new found love for photography with my longtime love for fashion. I evolved from spontaneously taking iPhone shots in front of a wall to creating a concept in advance and having my boyfriend or tripod take photos of me with a DSLR camera.

Looking back, being so homesick was probably the best thing to happen to me because it made me start something new and motivated me to continue learning about it. I still have so much to learn, and I can’t wait to one day compare my new images to the images I’m creating now and think “wow, I can’t believe I thought those were good.”

Please tell us about your art.
I am a fashion content creator. I create concepts for each shot by curating an outfit and include any pieces that come from brands and make a mood board. Then I execute the concept by modeling the outfit in an outdoor location and edit the photos using Lightroom.

As a girl who thrives off of being outdoors, I like to create photos that have a sense of adventure to them. The location for most of my photos, if not all, are mountains, open fields, rooftops, beaches, etc. I want to erase the stigma that if you are a fashion lover (“girly girl”), then you hate getting your hands dirty and going outside. A woman can be both stylish and outdoorsy; you don’t have to only choose one!

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I see success as both short and long term goals being achieved.

In order to feel successful as an artist, I think it’s essential to remember to look back and see how far you’ve come. It’s very easy to look at what you’re currently creating and getting discouraged when it doesn’t turn out the way you envisioned it to be. It’s not a bad thing to critique your work because it means mentally you know exactly what you want, now you just need to figure out how to execute; but you also need to look at how far you’ve come, recognize the small successes you have accomplished along the way. I think it’s key to know that learning is a never-ending journey and to not feel discouraged when you hit a bump in the road. The ambition to continue to learn new things and set new goals for yourself is important when wanting to succeed in a long term goal.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
