Meet Victoria Scott and Lindsay Cummings of Scribbler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Scott and Lindsay Cummings.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Victoria and Lindsay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My business partner and I are authors and friends who went through every stage of the publishing process together–from finishing that first draft, to finding an agent, to landing our dream publishers. We learned how to market our books together, how to build a fanbase, and how to create a sustainable career as a writer.

Then, during a moment of reflection–after we’d published seventeen books between the two of us–we asked ourselves what would have made the journey easier. And the answer was writing tips from successful authors, access to publishing decision makers, and tools to stay motivated when the self-doubt crept in.

There wasn’t something like that on the market for writers. So we created it! And we packaged it in monthly boxes for a fraction of the cost of writing conferences and workshops.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Does the learning curve count as a struggle? Because there is so much to absorb about the subscription box industry! It’s a bottomless well of information, and it was easy to feel overwhelmed. Outside of that, I think many new businesses struggle with balancing current jobs–for us, hitting our writing deadlines–with their new responsibilities in addition to making time for family and friends.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Scribbler story. Tell us more about the business.
We are actually the first and only subscription box for writers. We found that 200 million Americans aspire to write a book, and we want to be there to help them on that path. Each of our boxes come with–

Writing Theme (ex. Characters, Plot, World Building)
New Release Book
Writing Passport (with an essay on writing techniques from the author)
Exclusive Invitation to Connect with a Publishing Decision Maker
Curated Writerly Gifts (and how to use them!)

Cratejoy, a mega platform for subscription boxes, recently ran a story on us that stated we are growing fifty times faster than the average sub box, in an industry Forbes Magazine says is “exploding with growth.” And then BuzzFeed listed us as one of the best subscription boxes for creatives. It’s been a crazy few weeks!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
There’s always an aspect of luck involved in anything you attempt, whether it’s working against you, or with you. But you get nowhere without meeting luck halfway when it does strike or preparing yourself to dig in your heels when it turns its back on you.
