Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktor Taushanov.
Viktor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to the US 17 years ago with no English and $1,000 borrowed to buy a car. My ex-wife at this time was attending Richland College, then UTD. I was working for $5 per hour in construction and delivering pizza. I coached competitive soccer kids on strength and conditioning.. I decided to move into the real estate business in 2007 when I thought that my English was good enough to effectively communicate, but I was wrong. I discovered that my English is was still too poor to successfully sell real estate, I didn’t even know what a listing was on my first day class in the real estate school. Regardless, I took my state exam and passed the test the first time.
When I started with Coldwell Banker, I didn’t have any idea about how to sell. During their training, I was advised to put all of my contacts from high school, college and the corporate world on a spreadsheet and start calling and sending emails, but the only people I knew were several people from my home country, (who didn’t need a new home) and a couple of coaches. I built my business form zero, improving my English, making contacts and developing a big network of professionals. Now, I’m running my real estate business, investing and continuing to grow my business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not a smooth road at all. I was struggling with the language, the culture and the lack of contacts and network and lack of money as well.
