Today we’d like to introduce you to Violeta Deridder.
Violeta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My family migrated here when I was 14 years old and at age 16, I went to University of AZ where I obtained my B.S. degree in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing, which married my love for fashion and business.
My life, like a lot of people, has been full of soaring highs and crushing lows, but instead of letting that adversely affect me, I redirected my energy and focused on building a business where I can express my passion for fashion and decor.
Having once been an international flight attendant, I had the opportunity to see how people in different cultures express thru their fashion and decor. I also appreciated how their culture played a part in their expression of self. I have always been proud of my heritage and culture.
Frida Kahlo has been one of my idols, she has been an inspiration to me. The way she overcame personal adversity to become one of Mexico’s most renounced artist. In her tribute, I carry many items honoring her. So when I decided to start Vio custom collections, I wanted to curate and create a collection of my heritage and that represented my love of the world and the cultures that make it up.
Growing my business was a slow process but I was glad for the opportunity to nurture it so that it was truly an expression of my vision. Working with artisans and suppliers in Mexico, India and other countries require time and patience. I had to take time to build relationships and respect that other cultures conduct business differently, conducting business in foreign languages has its challenges. People see the store front but business is also made up of importing which can be a business into itself. Sourcing the right materials for clothing and jewelry I design and create is also another aspect of my business. Some of the designs are made by artisans in Mexico but many of them are made here in the U.S. with international materials or combined.
While there are a lot of aspects to my business which means I have a lot of balls to juggle. I am happy to get the collection I want to share with my clientele.
What sets me apart from others is the way I acquire my merchandise. Every piece, whether it was one of our designs or our hand-picked imports, has a story to tell. One of my favorite things about my business is sharing the stories of the items we carry. They are all uniquely influenced by where they were made, the artisans that made them and their cultural significance. It’s how I brand the business. Our inventory is a diverse plot of characters, that collectively tell the story of my business.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe my unique collections that are personally selected and designed. I also pride myself in that we are providing our clientele with a good shopping experience and great customer service. Keep growing with the new needs and designs of the people that are interested in fashion, home decor and culture.
