Meet Virginia Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Virginia Turner.

Virginia, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Interior Design has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I have practiced in many areas of design (corporate, healthcare, hospitality) and finally found my niche in high-end residential design about ten years ago. Since then, with a move from Tennessee to Texas mixed in, I have been working to increase my knowledge and skills both in the creative aspects of interior design as well as the business side of interior design. I had the honor of working with a fabulous firm in the Fort Worth area for almost eight years before I decided to walk away and start making my own mark. Between having two small children and my husband’s career at a crossroads, the timing for the leap into entrepreneurship was scary, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was undeniably the right thing to do. Then, the opportunity to work with life-long friends on the renovation of their beautiful Fort Worth home really solidified to me that this was the path I was meant to go down and this was the time to do it! It has been a lot of hard work but worth every minute, and being able to set this example for my two young girls has been amazing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest challenges is something I suspect is familiar to all entrepreneurs, and that is that I wear so many hats every day. I am designing, producing, procuring, and book-keeping as well as working hard to set up systems that will make this process as smooth as possible for everyone involved. I want my clients to be thrilled with their beautiful spaces and thrilled with the process that we took to get to the finished product, so I’ve spent a lot of time working on creating an efficient and detailed road map for my projects. This has meant a lot of late nights and early mornings, but it’s proving to be worth it as my projects are moving along.

Please tell us about your work.
My primary objective as an interior designer is to give my clients a unique, beautiful, and functional space that is a reflection of them and their lifestyle. I want these spaces to be timeless and perfectly curated to suit their personalities and the things they love. The meaningful relationships developed with clients during the design process are not only one of my favorite parts of this process, but they cultivate a result that is one of a kind. I want the attention to detail, quality, and overall impact to reflect that I have worked on the project, but I don’t want to subscribe to a specific “look” that I become known for.

I also want to be known for providing a transparent and seamless process. Designing a home or even a single space can be overwhelming to people, and I want to do everything I can to make the experience enjoyable and easy!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
As a young designer, I was working in Nashville and received a job offer from a firm in New York City. It had been my dream to work there, so I took the position, packed my things, and moved to Manhattan. In what seemed like a series of instances of bad luck, my room mate backed out on our agreement, so I was sleeping on friend’s couches, and my job description changed to basically only include materials library management. I knew this wasn’t going to lead to where I wanted to be in my career, but I had left my job in Nashville and my apartment and felt very stuck and very much out of luck.

However, because my amazing boss in Nashville welcomed me back and I learned such a great deal under her wing, I was able to get on the path that lead to me finding the love of residential design, and make my way here to Texas (obviously with quite a few steps in between).
