Meet Vishnu Maya Upadhyay of pioneer health care clinic in Garland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vishnu Maya Upadhyay.

Vishnu Maya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from Kathmandu, Nepal (the country with the tallest mountain in the world). I have been residing in Dallas, Texas since 1996.

I grew up hearing adventurous stories from my father about America being the land of opportunities. While growing up I had a great desire to come to the USA, but did not know how. I tried to search more about it through foreign magazines, e-blogs, the Internet, and TV shows. I bought t-shirts, pens, pencils, shoes, or anything that would read “made in USA.”

My professional career in the USA started when I arrived to New York in 1996 in a quest for a nursing job from Bahrain. My first few months in New York were overwhelming. I called home daily to get reassurance from my parents. My mother’s advice at the time of leaving was “East or West, parents are the best.” I contacted her quite frequently, especially when I felt scared and lonely. Gradually I gained courage and confidence. I successfully passed the board exam and moved to Dallas.

I was able to secure my first job in a busy ER on a 3-month probationary period. I continued to work diligently and was able to impress the department with my skill sets and hardworking personality. I was honored with the charge nurse promotion within 2 years of starting my nursing career in the department.

My desire to advance my education guided me to apply for the women’s health nurse practitioner program at UT South Western Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. I received a full scholarship and I finished the program in 2000. I worked in Parkland as a nurse practitioner in the women’s health department until 2008 and decided to go back to obtain a master’s degree in family nurse practitioner from Texas Women University in May of 2008. Currently, I am enrolled into the Doctorate of Nursing Practice Program and due to graduate in November of 2017.

I have had several opportunities to deliver safe and efficient care to patients with health needs in various settings. I am proud of my abilities and expertise to help patients with simple to complex health problems. After 26 years of nursing and 13 years of nurse practitioner experience, I decided to open a boutique style medical clinical to offer individualized medical care with an exceptional experience. We inaugurated Pioneer Healthcare Clinic in February of 2013 and added a second location in March of 2015.

As a healthcare professional and entrepreneur, I have been extremely satisfied to offer care with compassion. I have been enjoying my role as a provider, nurse leader, mentor, educator, and preceptor. I am proud of my achievements as a nurse practitioner and pleased to continue to contribute my proficiencies and knowledge with my patients, their families, and my students.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have always worked for hospitals. I never had to worry about any business aspect of the operation. Learning about running business while seeing patients was very challenging.

Please tell us about Pioneer Healthcare Clinic.
Pioneer Healthcare clinic is boutique style small family practice clinic. In average we see around 20 patients for their primary care need. The clinic is designed and decorated to give homely feeling. Every room and lobby  has chandelier and music system. Lobby is decorated as office lobby so patients feel relaxed.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have added private shower room attached to procedure room. Also design lobby like a hotel lobby.
