Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivian Trejo, Bryan Nguyen and Michael Trejo.
Vivian , Bryan and Michael , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It has always been a dream to own our own business. When Bryan and I (Vivian) married back in 2011, we planned to open a donut shop. Things were delayed after finding out we were expecting our first born. Seven years and three kids later, we revisited the subject after settling in our new town where we planted roots. One day after seeing the space available, we called. I called just because we were curious, but one thing led to another. After much discussion and planning, we partnered with Michael (vivians brother) who was working for himself as a realtor. We all had our reservations. There were so many reasons to not do this. But we hated the thought of looking back and saying “What if?” I was a stay at home mom and Bryan was the head of IT at his job at the time. We talked about all the possibilities, and wanted to stick to the original goal of donut shop. Late we decided to add ice cream, popcorn, and we still plan to add more to the store. But most importantly we wanted to create a space that was close to the community. A place were family can come enjoy a treat and play a board game. Disconnect from the world for a little bit, and just be together. We weren’t really sure if it was going to work out, but we were all fully prepared to dive in and make this dream come true. So we dove in.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not a smooth at all. Every day there is a new bump in the road. To start off, we are in a 100 year old building. That is a whole story on its own. We’ve dealt with everything from being ripped off and taken advantage of, to losing suppliers that didn’t want to take the risk on us, barely making deadlines and facing a lot of set backs. We had the building since November 2018. It took us seven months to jump all the hoops and finally open. Things have gone a lot smoother now that we are open, but its still rough. Running your own business is never easy. We push on every single day and never give up. Of course we have days were we ask our selves, “What the hell did we get ourselves into? Is this worth it?” But the good days, the smiling faces, and the community really do make it worth it.
Please tell us about your business.
We are Main Street Emporium. We are a full blow donut shop and Ice cream parlor. We have other things in our store like popcorn, candy, sodas. We even carry gluten free. sugar free treats. We still plan to add more in our store. Some of our most popular things in our store are our TEXAS shaped donuts. Ice Cream Donuts Sandwiches. Giant 10″ Donuts – we do a lot of these for birthdays with custom messages.
Our most popular ice cream flavors are Texas Praline and Big Red (yes, like the soda). Aside from the really tasty donuts we make fresh daily and the many flavors of homemade ice cream, I’d like to think we are most know for our customer service. our customer service is something we really take pride in.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to us comes in many different stages. We set a goal and we meet it, its a success.
Just opening was a success. Our first 100 Facebook page likes was a success.
If we keep growing as a company and see new faces often, I think we are most definitely on the right path to a successful brand.
