Today we’d like to introduce you to Bruce Barry.
Bruce, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in New Jersey in 1960. I inherited my artistic talent from my father, a former Disney artist.
As a young boy I would ride around town on a bicycle with my art supplies in tow and paint windows for local business.
As I got older, my interest in the arts grew. I knew by the time I graduated from high school I would be following the path of my father. Art soon became my life. I taught myself how to sculpt, build and fiberglass and learned to work with all mediums.
In 1979 I started Wacky World Studios.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
At a very early age I had Rheumatic Fever, a potentially fatal illness, and was admitted into Children’s Specialized Hospital where I spent years staring at the sterile walls and ceiling. This bleak experience inspired me to paint and create exciting fun places, no matter where they were. Once I was fully recovered, I set off on my bicycle and utilized the skills I learned from my dad, painting signs and Christmas windows for local businesses.
My life took a very sad turn after my father passed away when I was seventeen years old. I was forced to live in my car and had to eat out of dumpsters. My trunk became my studio and I once again turned to making money painting store windows.
I definitely had struggles, but looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. Those challenges gave me the drive and inspiration that brought me to where I am. I learned painting, cartooning, sculpting, carpentry . . . all the skills I now utilize to create themed environments all over the country.
Today I am blessed with a 25,000 square foot studio filled with my “Theme Team” of very talented artists, craftsmen, sculptors, technicians and administrators that help me fulfill my life’s goal of creating exciting fun spaces for children . . . and the child in all of us.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Wacky World Studios, LLC – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
