Today, we’d like to introduce you to Waya.
Hi Waya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Born on March 17th, 1990, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Waya’s early years were shaped by a deep love for music and the arts. From a young age, he found solace and inspiration in the performances of music legends like Michael Jackson, and his passion for acting was ignited at just 9 years old when he watched his first Sidney Poitier film, “To Sir, with Love.”
Throughout the hardships he faced, creativity became Waya’s lifeline, guiding him through the toughest moments and fueling his resilience. At 23, he embarked on a new chapter in his life, leveraging social media to share his story and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In 2015, he began his medical transition, embracing his identity with courage and authenticity.
Waya’s journey took a new trajectory when, at 27, he gained widespread recognition through a viral video on the popular app TikTok. Since then, he has continued to captivate audiences with engaging content, securing brand deals, collaborating with like-minded creatives, and breaking barriers as a Trans public figure.
Today, Waya is not only a rising star in social media but also a trailblazer in the acting world, poised to make his mark with his talent, authenticity, and unwavering determination to create change and inspire others every step of the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Despite growing up in a religious household in a small town, Waya’s innate talent and star quality were undeniable. However, his journey to self-discovery was fraught with challenges, particularly as he grappled with his gender identity.
At the age of 15, he bravely came out as a lesbian, only to later embrace his truth as a transgender man, a decision that unfortunately led to rejection from his family and subsequent homelessness during his young adulthood.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Today, Waya is a rising star in social media and a trailblazer in the acting world, poised to make his mark with his talent, authenticity, and unwavering determination to create change and inspire others every step of the way.
“There aren’t many well-renowned Black trans male actors out there. I desire to change that narrative and fearlessly represent my community.” – Waya.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Life is short, and things are temporary. Losing a parent during Covid made me assess my life and what I wanted for myself.
I went through a divorce during Covid, and it was one of the hardest points in my life. But coming out of it, I’m proud I made the decision to choose myself over everything else. I haven’t looked back since.
