We are thrilled to be connecting with Westonn again. Westonn is a Singer-Songwriter and is also a content partner. Content partners help Voyage in so many ways from spreading the word about the work that we do, sponsoring our mission and collaborating with us on content like this. Check out our conversation with Westonn below.
Westonn, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
My name is Westonn and I’m a singer-songwriter from Dallas. I’ve been singing since I was a kid in high school and making music for the past three years. I love music and what it does for the soul and for other people.
You recently released your music video for your single “Missing You.” What was it like making that video?
Making that video was very spontaneous. I hadn’t put out any video content in a while and it was time. I reached out to my photographer and literally said “Hey, you wanna shoot a music video?” Without hesitation, she was down. So, we drove to New Mexico and shot it in one weekend and drove back home after. It was a lot of fun, she’s an amazing photographer/videographer and we had so much fun. We both really understand each other’s vision and we are just two peas in a pod. The video really turned out amazing and people really love it so I couldn’t be happier.
As an independent artist, how involved are you in the creation of your music?
I am very involved. I find engineers/producers who have the exact sound I’m looking for. From there I write, record, and produce my own vocals from start to finish. At times it is very frustrating, but once I get my sound where I want it, it’s like winning the lottery. I know exactly what I want from my music and being able to be a major part in creating that is very rewarding and reminds me that I can make my visions come to life no matter how difficult they seem.
How have you as an artist been affected by the pandemic?
To be honest, I remember how hard it’s been for millions of people and that in turn reminds me to be grateful for the ups and downs I’ve experienced. I had an amazing opportunity lined up last year that fizzled away before my eyes because of the pandemic as well as any show opportunities. At the end of 2020, I re-evaluated my life and career and ultimately was inspired to go even harder and that has been the ultimate effect on me as an artist.
What are some of the challenges of being an independent artist these days?
Managing yourself is such a major component of being an independent artist these days. As an artist, you are so focused on your craft, learning, perfecting, and executing. As an independent up-and-coming artist, you also have to manage yourself. That ranges from publicity, marketing, promotion, networking, behind-the-scenes work, and planning. It can be a headache sometimes but writing things down and setting up a plan for yourself is a great way to start.
What new projects do you have coming up?
I’m working on my next single right now that’s going to set the tone for the next evolution in my sound. I’m really excited about it. I also have some virtual and live shows planned for the coming months and this summer. I also have some collaborations coming out that I’m very proud of.
