Meet Whitney and Jeff Nash of Nashional Financial in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney and Jeff Nash.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Jeff decided to go out of state for college which eventually landed him in Texas. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and then Mississippi State University with a Master of Taxation degree. He worked for the Big 4, a regional firm and then as the Controller for high-net-worth family-owned companies before pursuing his first love, the stock market, and becoming a financial advisor with a regional wealth management firm.

Whitney was born in California, but after a few stops along the way, her family settled in Michigan. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University, she moved to Dallas for the weather and quality of life. Whitney spent 14 years working in operations management for two global corporations.

Jeff and Whitney Nash co-created Nashional Financial in 2017 to develop customized and creative solutions that would facilitate strong financial futures for their clients. As a husband and wife financial advising team, Jeff and Whitney meet with clients together to not only address the technical side of financial planning but to explain things in ways that are easy to follow and understand regardless of the client’s level of sophistication or experience.

Jeff and Whitney met each other at the beginning of 2008, were married in the summer of 2010, and had a son in the fall of 2016. They live in McKinney, Texas, and have two shelter rescues: a gregarious mutt and a small horse, a.k.a. lab/greyhound mix.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an independent firm starting from scratch, Nashional Financial doesn’t have the name recognition or marketing budget of bigger, more well-known financial institutions, so ‘getting out there’ has been a challenge. It has also been difficult to overcome the negative biases towards the financial advising industry. Many people do not trust Financial Advisors or think that they’re just trying to ‘sell me something’. They also tend to assume that Nashional Financial only offers investment advising and life insurance. While Nashional Financial includes a fee-only registered investment advisor*, it has been a challenge to communicate that Nashional Financial is different in its approach to financial advising and its additional diversified savings and investing strategy offerings.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nashional Financial story. Tell us more about the business.
Nashional Financial helps individuals, families and business owners create tax-efficient and asset class-diversified planning strategies. The reason Jeff and Whitney started Nashional Financial was because they saw the benefit of providing well-rounded service offerings to help people with whatever they need all under one roof, instead of only one or two things.

Jeff is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and a Certified Public Accountant. This combination of credentials means that he understands not only financial strategies for retirement, education, etc. planning but of the tax implications of the options available. The financial plans that Nashional Financial creates, called Nash-Ups, are provided for a one-time flat fee. The Nash-Ups include a deep-dive, thorough analysis of their clients’ current financial picture to see what’s working well, what could be fine-tuned and what opportunities might be available that they aren’t taking advantage of that could help them reach their goals. Once a plan is implemented, they stay in touch, at least once a year, to make changes as needed and to facilitate a personal and long-lasting relationship with their clients.

Nashional Financial focuses on the three ways money is taxed – taxable, tax-deferred and tax-free and helps people diversify by tax treatment. Along with the importance of having a tax-efficient strategy, they also offer access to an expansive range of asset classes. Most institutions, large and small, do not include options and platforms to invest in real estate, futures and options or self-directed retirement accounts and plan document providers. Being diversified by asset class is a critical component to allocating financial resources so that all eggs aren’t in one asset class bucket.

Since Jeff is a CPA, he also has a CPA firm, Hodgson & Nash CPAs, with another CPA business partner, Tyler Hodgson. This allows for an easy transition to offer tax preparation and planning, bookkeeping and other accounting services for the individuals, business owners and real estate investors that Jeff and Whitney work with. This facilitates a cohesive financial and tax planning strategy and eliminates the need to go to another person/company for accounting functions.

Nashional Financial has been voted Best Financial Planner 2018 and 2019 through McKinneyonline.com and was nominated for, and subsequently won, Best Family Financial Planning Consultancy – North Texas 2019 through Acquisition International. Jeff and Whitney are honored and humbled to have received these awards from their community. They are testaments to how much Jeff and Whitney care about their clients and provide advice and recommendations to them as if they are their best friend, parents, sibling or child.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
While Jeff and Whitney believe that someone can experience luck, good or bad, they don’t necessarily think that it has played much of a role in their lives or business. They are more of the mindset that everything happens for a reason, even if you can’t figure out what it is for a while, and that when one door closes another one opens. Both have happened many times in each of their lives personally and professionally. Every time it ended up being good for them, even if it didn’t seem like a good thing in the beginning.
