William, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I opened Bargain Sleep Center in 2013 in Denton. I worked in the industry before, but saw a better way of getting good American made mattresses from the factory to people without all the stuff in between. I was tired of the useless excess and cost forced on consumers by the big corporate furniture and mattress stores, hidden behind long financing programs. People don’t need to pay hundreds/thousands more to subsidize a shopping experience many find uncomfortable and stressful. It’s been tough but great. At first, I was harassed online by some other mattress/furniture guys when I had just started. I had messages left on my site that attacked my integrity, honesty and business – all false. I compete with huge corporations in an industry that fabricates fake retail prices to feign savings. I compete with companies that routinely lie about discounts, services and quality, yet most consumers are ignorant when it comes to purchasing mattresses, so it’s easy to get away with the lies. I don’t run my store like that, so it can be difficult to show the ultimate value to people without making up fantasy savings. I run things in Denton by myself, so I don’t usually get to leave town for more than a day or two, and I’m always on call. I’ve had a couple terrible trucks I had to keep fixing to stay delivering, but I couldn’t afford anything better. (My first delivery truck was a 95 Mitsubishi Mighty Max I bought for $500 that had to be turned off to put in reverse and sounded like a blender full of nails.)

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We would like to expand into smaller towns and areas that have to pay a premium for mattresses and then wait forever to get it. We want to expand into more places in and around DFW, as well. We are always looking at new opportunities and markets that mesh with our mentality and business model, so who knows what could come next?
