Today we’d like to introduce you to William Shattuck.
William, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I chose to start my dental career by practicing in a rural community in western Oklahoma. There I was mentored by an amazing doctor. I loved working in the underserved areas of rural Oklahoma. The aspect of healthcare that has always driven me is taking care of people. Practicing in the smaller towns I was able to connect with my patients in a way that is often missed in offices in big cities.
After several years of practicing in Oklahoma, I felt the pull to come home to Texas. I grew up in the DFW Metroplex and there is nowhere else in the world like it! Building and owning my own office has always been a goal of mine because I wanted my practice to keep the smaller, more intimate feel I enjoyed so much in Oklahoma. I am a firm believer that the patient experience in many areas has become too cold, impersonal, and sterile which has put many people off from seeking out the care that they need. My goal is to create an office experience that has a warm, friendly appeal the second my patients walk in the door.
We have experienced tremendous success just in the past year simply because we show our patients how much we care about them in everything we do. We get to know our patients, their concerns, desires, and needs. By taking care of our patient’s smiles, we are giving them the confidence to experience life to the fullest. And I can’t even begin to count how many times I have seen a patient’s life completely change simply by helping them to smile again. My patients are the reason I practice and my goal is to continue to change lives through my patient’s smiles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. Finding the right office space is the foundation around which you build your practice and location is a big determining factor when it comes to attracting new patients and finding the right location proved difficult. Our area is growing rapidly just like the rest of the metroplex and with any sort of change comes growing pains. However, we have been fortunate to have had a great amount of success and every success story brings with it the opportunity to continue exceeding our patients’ expectations and doing what we love.
The hardest thing to do when building any business, but in particular a successful dental practice is assembling the right staff. Early on, that proved a little difficult and we have had a few changes over the past year and a half, but fortunately now I am very proud to say that we have a great core of knowledgeable and caring assistants, hygienists, and support staff to help create the sort or warm and friendly atmosphere our patients love.
Please tell us about Radiant Dental Care.
We are a single doctor dental office that emphasizes comprehensive family care. One of the hardest things for families today is to find an office that is capable of seeing the entire family and we want to make that easier. Over the course of my career, I have treated children as young as 3 and typically recommend our office as a great setting for children aged 7 and above. We enjoy getting know the families who choose to be patients at our office and watching those families grow.
We have expanded access to care as much as possible by being in-network providers for a wide range of PPO dental plans. Most private practitioners are only in network with one or two insurance providers. How corporate “Dental Chains” attract patients is by being in network with as many insurance plans as possible. However, regarding such large chains, many patients rightly feel they do not get the personalized care they deserve. We give patients the best of both worlds, streamlining many of the difficulties patients have trying to navigate their insurance but at the same making sure patients get one on one time with the doctor, creating an atmosphere of warmth, and personalizing everything we do to our patients’ needs.
I have been awarded a few distinctions in my career thus far. I was awarded America’s Top Doctor honors in 2013 and 2014 and shortly after our practice opened I was given the distinction of being named as one of Dr. Oz’s Dallas Top Doctors in 2016.
I specialize in smile reconstructions and have helped give many patients the confidence to smile again. I can recount so many stories of smiles we have transformed to prepare a patient for a wedding, reunion, or other life mile stone. These are the stories that are closest to my heart. Your smile is such an intimate and personal part of who you are and when someone hides it because they are not confident in their appearance it affects every other aspect of their life. Transforming a patient’s smile can quite literally give someone a new outlook on life and that is what we do.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I am a big supporter of sports, especially for children because my favorite childhood memory was a time when I was 8. My baseball team was in the playoffs and we had the bases loaded. I had been playing first base all game long and my coach called a time out and put me in to pitch. It was the very first time I had pitched in a game. The first batter I faced, I struck out with three straight strikes. The second batter the same. The third batter, I threw two strikes and the third pitch he hit straight up over the pitcher’s mound. It was the highest fly ball I could ever remember seeing up to that point. I remember the pop the ball made the second it hit my glove and the feeling of relief that washed over me as it I realized that I had caught the ball and the game was over. My dad raced out to the pitcher’s mound and threw me in the air. All my teammates rushed the pitcher’s mound and tackled me to the dirt and carried me off the field on their shoulders. The feeling was exhilarating and exciting and so proud.
