Today we’d like to introduce you to William Thompson.
William, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My wife and I started in our garage as Ambush Fitness. My daughter came up with the name. Our school mascot is the Tiger and when tigers hunt in a pack it’s called an ambush…so Ambush Fitness was born. We worked out in the garage for a couple of months, then Reebok allowed us to perform workouts in an empty store next to them while they were in the process of moving. Shortly after that we found the building that we are currently in now. We have continuously grown over the last couple of years and recently became a CrossFit affiliate. We are now CrossFit AF (Ambush Fitness). We are outgrowing our facility and we are in the process of having a new one built to support our growth.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been a few obstacles over the last couple of years. One of the hardest things is just getting people to try CrossFit. Many people see the CrossFit Games on ESPN or Facebook and think they will have to come in and be able to do the things they have seen on TV. Those are the 40 most elite male and female athletes worldwide. We may perform some of the same movements but people need to understand that any movement can be modified to meet their current level of fitness, even those that have never worked out before. The majority of those that try it will love it!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with CrossFit AF – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
One thing that sets us apart from other gyms is that we spend a lot of time educating our athletes. We don’t just tell them “go do squats” we teach those proper mechanics as well as the importance of the movement and how it will transfer to life outside the gym. We scaffold information and present it in different methods to ensure everyone is getting the most out of each class. Everything we do has a purpose, nothing is done by accident. There is a specific stimulus intended for each workout. We make sure the athletes understand what is to gain from each workout or movement. This may include one or more of the ten components of fitness: strength, cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, flexibility, agility, speed, power, balance, reaction time, or coordination. We want them to be able to continue to work out and lead a healthy lifestyle even if they are unable to make it to the gym.
We are also personally invested in our athletes and spend time getting to know them. Not just how fast they can run or how much weight they can lift but what they have going on outside the gym. If someone has had a bad day, we can tell as soon as they walk in and it is our job to make sure their hour in the gym is the best hour of their day. We know when they need to be pushed or when they just need to sweat. We know if they need to blow off steam or are seeking advice. We coach the whole person not just the athlete.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We recently purchased land and are in the process of having a new facility built to accommodate our growth. The new facility will include running trails, an outdoor workout area, an obstacle course and eventually a swimming area. We are extremely excited about this expansion and the opportunities it will bring!
