Today we’d like to introduce you to Willis and BJ Johnson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Willis and BJ. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have more than 30 years’ experience in broadcasting, advertising, marketing and sales and served as a Marketing and Sales consultant to several technical and telecommunications companies.
At Service Broadcasting Corp. I served as the Morning Show host for 30 years as well as the Program/Promotions Director and supervises a staff of on-air talent and sales/promotions activities.

JBJ Marketing was started as a suggestion from Former Mayor Ron Kirk, because people were always asking him to ask me (Willis) about issues within the city of Dallas. So Kirk suggested I start a consulting company. I didn’t start the company right away, I took my time and developed it into something that I knew would work.
Within two years I started the company…
The name stems from my last name “Johnson” and my son’s name “BJ”…. hence JBJ.
I wanted this to be a family business. I feel that African Americans need to do a better job of passing on their legacy and businesses to their family by grooming their sons and daughters to continue on the family business.
We are JBJ Marketing and JBJ Management, we have changed to management because as we continue to grow we are able to offer so many other services.
I owning my own company and every year have been working hard at filling a void that Dallas needs. The team we have built the last few years is growing strong and I believe over the next few years JBJ will be on the top of everybody’s list!
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to our success has not been smooth. We of course deal with the day to day struggles of running your own business, but because our company specializes in Crisis Management and Political Strategy, we can sometimes get caught up in the politics of choosing particular sides.
However, we have represented the four mayors of Dallas, which is a winning plus for JBJ and an example of how we can help create winning plan of action.
Another thing that we have learned during our entrepreneurship journey is that you can’t believe everything you read in the media. So many times people, news articles, etc write on speculation or pure hearsay and it’s sad so many inaccurate columns and news are written based on nothing.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JBJ Management story. Tell us more about the business.
JBJ Management is a strategic planner for large and small projects, as well as being able to deliver a crisis management component when necessary.
Over the years, evidence of success has been displayed with firms engaging JBJ Management. We provide you with proper planning and community/business stakeholder involvement. JBJ provides planning and development with others in the conceptual stage to the completion of the project.
Business development is a part of the everyday operation of JBJ. A key capability JBJ provides is organizing and facilitating meetings with key stakeholders that are essential to the finished product of the client. Both public and private projects have been delivered with intimate knowledge of the geographical area and the business climate and culture taken into consideration.
Strategic planning is crucial to the success of any plan or project. JBJ takes pride in early examination of each enterprise that it undertakes. Understanding the internal makeup of the client’s operation is important as well as the project that is at hand. JBJ is systemic in its approach so that all components are made aware that opens all avenues to lead to the success of the project.
Crisis Management
JBJ has a proven record of delivering clients through alternative routes after the original plan was met with challenges. We help to devise strategies to come out of uncertain conditions and also decide on the future course of action.
What sets us apart from others is we strategically plan and create solutions for each client.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the last 10 years, JBJ has grown from one client to over 20 clients that help develop and strategically plan business solutions. We also provide political strategies with an organized effort within a specific target group by constructing a critical campaign path that involves awareness, components, engagement and action.
We have also grown from a 3 person company to a diverse company with well over 15 employees…
JBJ may be small but we have the capabilities to pack a punch when needed!!!
