Meet Xavier McGilberry of Home Care Network (HCN) in Desoto and Rockwall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xavier McGilberry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I remember receiving a call and a doctor was on the line informing me my mother had a massive stroke and my consent was needed in order to move forward with process to attempt to reverse the stroke. My heart stopped. I didn’t know who this doctor was on the other line and my mother life was in his hands. Through the grace of God my mother survived but that was only the beginning. Decisions had to be made on post care which was important to my mother quality of life after this tragedy. I had no idea what to do or who to trust. I was in the dark. This was the moment I realized my purpose. I always knew I would be in a position to help people but until then I didn’t know how. Now that I know my purpose I needed to join a team that had same core values as I had in order for success. Companies need a set of core values in order to achieve the kind of long-term, sustainable success that may lead to greatness. Companies need to exist for a higher purpose than mere profit generation in order to give amazing service and care.

I crossed over from business arena to the medical field and found out early that caring is not required. Through faith I was introduced to Belinda May owner of Home Care Network. Our first encounter was at social function and we conversed about everything from medical to coaching of employees. Time passed and I got a call from Ms. May saying she think she have a position that I would fit perfectly. I was silent because I didn’t think our conversation was that deep. I agreed to meet her and we talked about position and requirement. The list of job duties was long as my legs and I looked Ms. May in the eyes and said you would like for me to do all that? She replied “all that”. I informed her I would have to talk with my wife and think about the opportunity. Determined as Ms. May was she didn’t allow me to reach back out she asked me to meet her at her office. There she introduced me to the Homecare Network leadership team. I met Tayloria Green(CFO) Saundra Hill(Clinical Director)Michelle Singleton(Director of HR),Marilyn Coats(Director of Marketing )& Maritza Romero(Director of Intake) and I knew this was the place for me. Team of leaders who focused on quality of care and service. Leaders that had a purpose and were self-motivated. This felt like home.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey have not been smooth at all. The first struggle comes with finding the work life balance. Being in a field that people quality of life is in your hand means there is no down time. So this where building a team of the right people come into play and you can trust each employee will do the right thing and go the extra mile. Once the people are in place you get some of your personal time back. Secondly and one of my hardest challenges was communicating and dealing with people who didn’t have the passion and genuinely care for the patient’s well-being. I could never look at a patient as a commodity and each one is different. When doing transitional care it’s not just something we are passing on it is someone. This could be my mother, my father or my Aunt and it’s not cookie cut. Sometimes due to hospital and facilities volumes this get lost. I learned to set the expectation up front that HCN cares and we will always put patient well-being first. Once we started to establish that with our referral sources the task got a lot smoother. It is always a process. We are in a forever changing field but one thing stay constant and that is best patient care.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Proudest moment of my career actually just happened. Roughly about 5 months ago I got a call from a community asking if I could assist with a resident who just moved into the community. I went over to the community and spoke with the potential patient. She told me she was a teacher and was doing well but all of sudden got ill. All she remember was talking to her son and next thing she know she was waking up at hospital. She lost her house, car and a lot of possessions. She said being independent for so long and now she can’t walk and have to get around in a chair, she taking so many medications that she cannot count them all. She have her son near but no one else. As I listen it took everything to hold back the tears. So I told her we will get her quality of life back to where she smiling again and she now have new family. We partnered with her doctor and put together a plan of care. I visited the community and seen the resident often. On July 12, 2018 I was visiting the community as usual and seen the resident. She had a smile on her face and was looking great. She said Xavier guess what, I asked what news you got for me. She stood up out her electric chair and walked over to me and said this the news. I was speechless. She thanked me for caring. This was by far my proudest moment in my Career. Having a purpose and making other people lives better. There is no better accomplishment than that.
