Meet Yara Salameh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yara Salameh.

Yara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
SPIDERZ Soccer Club story started 12 years ago when our 4 years old kids started to play soccer in the city league, I volunteered to be the team manager, Coach Benjamin Misumi (Business partner and head coach of the club) was our volunteer coach. The boys team name was “Spiderman”.

While volunteering we found a passion to teach kids soccer and grow their talents, especially those with financial struggles who can’t afford soccer clubs fees. We started growing the team and added a scholarship program to host talented kids with financial hardship, and for many years we worked on minimum fees or pay as much as you can to get kids to play. The kids’ love for soccer and the support of the parents were essential factors of our steady growth and success as a team.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting as a non-profit was definitely challenging, as we had to invest our own money to ensure kids are registered in challenging leagues, wearing uniforms, and practicing in a safe environment, I recall the team owing 7k to Coach Benjamin who always used his CC to get the team going. Having soccer video classes in my living room for 18 kids and serving popcorn was the cheapest way to go.

While we try to fight the commercialization of the youth sports, we do have to face the reality that people are attracted to big names and that proving yourself as a small club requires energy and patience.

However, the main challenge we face while training the kids is the play-to-win mentality. Shifting the kids’ and parents’ mindset to focus on development and enjoying the game while striving to win. As coach Misumi yells in the games, I don’t care if you lose as long as you play the game well.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
4 years ago, we couldn’t keep up with the demand so we had to grow by recruiting experienced coaches who share our love for soccer, we added more teams and camps while maintaining an affordable pricing structure so every kid can play.

We currently have 7 soccer teams for ages from 5-17 years old; our U17 team has achieved major accomplishments and is playing in the Dallas Cup tournament this year. We also offer Soccer camps for beginners or for those who want to try out the game without commitment.

We are very proud to be able to provide the community with a solid soccer program that caters for all; We are mostly proud to create career and volunteering opportunities while developing talented and skillful soccer players with strong and healthy minds.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Our main focus is really growing a skillful soccer player without the pressure the sport industry can add on them. We truly enjoy seeing the kids try a new soccer skill, take some risks in the game, helping each other get up after falling, and watching their joy after scoring. Teaching soccer in a low-key environment where kids grow friendships and skills at the same time is our ultimate goal.
