Today we’d like to introduce you to Yizong (Ethan) Xie.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Yizong. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born and raised in China. Learning photography with my dad from a very young age with film cameras. Graduated from one of the best Chinese university with Industrial Design Major in 2000. answered God’s calling became a volunteer teacher (English and Computer) at a Chinese Seminary for two years after graduation.
I came to the United States in 2002 and became a Master of Divinity student at The Brite Divinity School, TCU. Ordained as Disciple of Christ Minister in 2008 and working for different churches as associate minister till 2018.
Never stop photography through the years. Never stopping improve my skills and understanding of the art of photography. I started my own photography business in 2017. I became a full time photographer in 2018. I absolutely love portrait photography. I have a strong passion for capturing the true characters of each client.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. I went through a divorce right after starting my own business in 2017. My faith got weakened, I just can’t keep serving God and God’s people like I was nor I wanted too. So I took a risk and decided to take a break from ministry and focus on my new life and photography.
The biggest struggle is to balance my business with children. The nature of portrait photography requires working on weekends for most of the time. I don’t want to miss the weekend time with my two lovely daughters. Also, I am good at photographing, interact with clients and prepossessing photos. But there is still a long way to go on marketing myself.
Please tell us about your business.
My business name is Ellicia Photos. My main focus is portrait photography. I put two of my daughters’ first name, Ellie and Lucia, together to name my company. I am specialized in family, children and professional portrait and high school senior photos. I also do wedding and event photography.
I am known for capturing the genuine character of people. Also, all my clients enjoyed my fun, interactive and easy photo shoot sessions. I capture their true story and expression during their most relaxed moments.
I am proud that all my clients really love the works that I produced and also enjoy the whole photo shoot experience, perfect using of light, whether natural light or artificial light, finding the extraordinary angle of view from ordinary settings, providing delightful photo shoot experience set me apart from others.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would love to be more prepared and focused more on marketing, branding and pricing.
