Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolie Millan.
Yolie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been playing music since I was a child, but I didn’t get into songwriting until my teenage years. During that time, I was dealing with depression and songwriting was a way to cope with that. I bought a drum kit and started recording demos by myself in my humble home studio. After that, I recorded a few demos with a friend of mine, Paola Guzman who was working as a studio engineer at Empire Sound at the time. I was then contacted by Jimmy Rogers of CSP Records after he heard a few of the demos my friend Paola had sent.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have of course been struggles. Sometimes, it was hard for me to believe in myself. That’s what my first single, the end was about. I was finally at a point in my life where I was happy with myself and proud of who I was. Despite some of the challenges you go through, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it does get better.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My music is very special to me. I’ve always likened performing original music to an audience to reading your personal diary aloud. It’s very intimate and you become very vulnerable. I wear my heart on my sleeve every time I perform. It’s a very special feeling when someone I’ve never met connects with something that came from my heart.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance. Sometimes, it may really feel like a struggle. It may be someone else bringing you down or it may even be yourself, but you can’t let yourself give up.
