Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Dyck.
Zachary, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for creating was always encouraged by my parents from a very young age. They encouraged pretending and were very strict about not using technology for too long during the day. This stemmed my imagination even further, by setting limits on the content that I was taking in, and giving unlimited freedom to create my own content.
I tell people that Lego is what got me into filmmaking because that was what I used to make said “content” in my childhood. My dad got me into building sets with him around six years old and eventually that’s all I asked for for Christmas and birthdays. Once I got older, my collection of diverse sets and mini-figures became my Hollywood backdrop for daydreaming. The stories I came up with on the floor of my room with each mini-figure was diverse and often lengthy. Sometimes I would have to be asked several times to come to eat dinner because I was “at a good part” in the narrative in my head. With the invention of YouTube in 2005, I was exposed to Lego stop motion videos, and this prompted me to make my own. Which in turn led to picking up my dads Sony camcorder and asking all of the neighborhood kids to come to be in a “movie.” My passion for videography and filmmaking has evolved from my first use of Final Cut Pro at the age of 12 and I have just completed my degree in Film from the University of North Texas.
What I have learned over the years has culminated in the creation of Rigid Motion Films, my shared video & media company that produces all forms of video content, from website marketing videos to narrative films. As I continue to foray further into film and videography, I have stayed busy with multiple companies as a freelancer around the DFW area. I have been involved in various productions and held positions such as; assistant camera, grip, assistant director, and script supervisor. Although my goal is to continue to learn and grow my skills in video and filmmaking, my ultimate goal is directing larger budget features. Creating exciting stories and bringing them to life with filmmaking is what I love to do most in the world. As I’ve grown up, I recognize the work, and the effort that goes into making TV shows and big-budget films of today, but truthfully when I am spending time doing this work, it takes me back to that 5-year-old kid again, and I realize that it is true, when you do what you love, it is not truly working at all. Seeing people feel something special toward content that you’ve made is one of the most rewarding feelings I’ve ever experienced and I don’t plan on letting that go anytime soon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been incredibly lucky that the road to get to where I am today has been relatively easy to travel. I have had support from family, friends, clients, and employers in recognizing that what I’m doing is effective and most importantly engaging. Feedback is everything in videography and when people critique my work with total honesty, that’s what helps me grow. That being said, I have had many other non-creative jobs in my life and I can honestly say that they have helped me realize that I will never stop moving forward with my current filmmaking dreams.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rigid Motion Films – what should we know?
At Rigid Motion Films, we create all forms of engaging video content and walk you through the whole process. From pre-production (planning) to production (shooting) to post-production (editing) we love getting to work closely and communicate effectively with clients. We create media such as non-profit outreach videos, corporate videos, individual website videos, music videos, narrative films, and documentaries.
I am personally very proud of our non-profit work as it is rewarding in so many ways to be able to create a video that spreads a positive, helpful, or even life-saving message. I believe what sets us apart from other video companies is that we exist to create a genuine feeling from our videos. In other words, we care about what emotions each video elicits in the viewers’ experience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe humility is one of the most important characteristics of success.
