Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Gibson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Zachary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Dallas Silversmiths since 1972 has a minimum order requirement! It’s One! Ok cut it in half and bring it in and we will work with that!
I first started in the Gold, Silver and Diamonds trade buying from dealers and the public. The gentleman I worked for would sell the day’s purchases for scrap the next day to provide money for more purchases. That was during the “heydays” of late 70s – early 80’s.
I realized quickly that some of the items could be cleaned, repaired, polished and sold for more than scrap and the sterling silver flatware could be polished and sold as complete sets or “pieces” to help people complete their sets.
I started “The Texas Gold Standard in Dallas” in 1982 and did business with some of the local business of that time including Dallas Gold and Silver and Dallas Silversmiths.
Dallas Silversmiths at that time only worked with polishing, repairs and silver plating.
I purchased the company in 2008 with the idea of expanding the business by adding to the silver plating of Copper, Brass, Nickel and 24Kt Gold plating. This would also include Bronze, Pewter and Pot metal.
We now offer decorative metals to antique Restoration, Repairs, Dent Removal, Garbage Disposal Repairs, Pro Hand Polishing and Plating.
Plating includes “color match” and “color change” plating.
In buying the company we saw many niche markets we wanted to provide services.
Homeowners and rehabbers are updating homes, bathrooms and kitchens are the prime areas to increase value of homes. We offer a service of renewing bathroom and kitchen faucets and fixtures back to original condition or color change to match the new décor.
Door handles, hinges, kick panels to mailboxes and chandeliers.
Hint to save money when changing out bathroom fixtures. If your house is 10 years or older and you purchase new faucets the diverter in the wall must be changed out. If, say, the tub has tile or marble it will probably have to be knocked out to place the new diverter in the wall for the new faucet.
Therefore, you must pay the additional work for the plumber to do this work and the patching up afterward.
By “Restoring” the old hardware, that by the way is probably much better quality than the new that is purchased for High Dollar, the fixtures and faucet go “right back on.” Do you see the savings?
Now, I tell customers over the phone “if you would be happy with a Lowes or Home Depot lower priced faucets you will probably save money.” Depending on the cost of the plumber!
We also offer as an option a clear sealer that “seals the metal” from sulfur in the air that causes tarnishing! No more polishing required!
We have had so many wonderful customers and comments over the years since purchasing the business. and currently have 5-star rating on Yelp and only one negative on Google!
My motto is “You are only limited to Your Imagination! Or MINE!”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a real smooth road because we are always trying to better the company and offer more services.
The main problem is it is an “Old Art” to do this type of work and no one is picking up the trade.
The companies in Houston and Oklahoma City have closed down and we get items shipped from NY City to California.
When I took over the company we guaranteed the returned item in 3-10 days and those days are over.
We do realize people need their front door hardware and bath fixtures ASAP and generally get them back by Friday or before if dropped off on Monday.
Our struggle now is we are getting more well-known with commercial accounts and we do not want that to cause our other customers to have to wait longer for their returns.
Hoping to find experienced help as we need it. That is our biggest struggle!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It is a success ONLY if it is a Win – Win – Win
WIN – for our Customers
WIN – for the Employees
WIN – for the Landlord
And hoping to go scuba diving at least once a year. I am now 3 years behind!!!!!
