Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Jeffries.
Please share your story with us Janine. How did you get to where you are today?
I sold insurance for 25 years. I’m a recovering insurance agent.
During that time (about 12 years ago) I became certified in Equine Sports Massage. I had show horses of my own so it made sense to be able to keep them in tip top condition. Word got out so I was able to build a little side business – I helped heal race horses, jumping horses, rodeo horses and personal companion horses. I had a relationship with a barn who helped handicapped children through learning how to ride. I took care of the “workers”. It was fun…and fulfilling, but I still had my day job.
About 3 years ago, my husband’s job moved us from South Florida to the Dallas area. It was the best thing that ever happened to us! We sold the horses and of course I couldn’t take my clientele with me so I continued the insurance sales job I had in Florida for about a year, but I had a hard time with the travel. One day my husband said, “No job is worth your happiness”…That statement changed my life forever.
I quit the insurance job and 6 months later I enrolled in Massage Therapy School! I found my calling!!! I will admit, for a second career, I profoundly underestimated the work it would take to learn the body. Anatomy, Kinesiology – all the muscles and their movements/actions. Pathology. It was intense! Totally worth it! I went straight into practice after graduation. I am a healer! Something I always knew deep down that I wanted to do.
I learn something new from each client I touch. Most have become friends. My clients range from adolescents to retirees, athletes to desk workers and everywhere in between. I enjoy every second of my job now. I enjoy every encounter with a new person and a new host of muscle tissue to explore! I enjoy making people feel better so they can carry on with their lives, pain free!
I recently completed my training with a Reiki Master and am now a Certified Reiki Practitioner. I plan on growing this aspect of my healing journey as a complimentary therapy to treat my whole client. I offer all types of massage from Swedish massage therapy to sports therapy to deep tissue (and now Reiki). Each client receives a personally tailored session to meet their specific and individual needs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, I struggled a bit with my confidence. Working with horses, I knew my therapeutic touch was healing. I knew the signals and signs to look for. People? A whole different animal! No pun intended! It took some getting used to but I love each and every experience with my clients. Getting feedback and knowing that I’m facilitating healing and helping my clients feel better so they can be active participants in their lives made my confidence level skyrocket! I learn something new every day and that keeps me humble.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a Zen Warrior. I get asked all the time about the name of the business, what it means and where it came from.
I’m a Zen sort of person. I’ll always take the less invasive, alternative therapy route. I like my quiet time and I prefer a book over the TV. Nature is my entertainment. We all have that Zen part of us that would rather enjoy the laid back life.
But each of us has a warrior side as well. Something we’re passionate about. Something that lights us on fire. The one thing that you’d do even if you didn’t think you could. It’s the stuff we live for! I love my job, and that means I’ll never have to “work” a day in my life! That’s what keeps me ALIVE.
What were you like growing up?
I was an active kid. I played volleyball, softball, I was a cheerleader and I could do anything on a unicycle! I loved my animals. My aspiration was to be a vet. I didn’t get the chance but always knew I wanted to do some healing work. I had no idea at the time that therapeutic massage therapy would be the path, but I’m so glad I took it!
