Meet Zo Smith of McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zo Smith.

Hi Zo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts in a place of limitation. Living with chronic illness means my days are often unpredictable and heavy, and I spent a long time trying to find balance in a world that moved faster than I could. Somewhere in the middle of all that, I discovered creating.

It started small, just me in my kitchen pouring wax, blending oils, and testing fragrances. At first, it was a distraction. Then it became a refuge. I realized I wasn’t just making candles; I was creating moments of calm. Each pour felt like therapy. Each scent was a reminder that even in uncertainty, there’s room for beauty.

What began as a personal outlet slowly turned into something bigger. My brand grew out of that same desire for peace and connection. Today, I handcraft candles, room sprays, rollerball fragrances, all-purpose cleaners, laundry detergents, wax melts, and soaps. Each item is made with care and intention. But it’s not just about what goes into the jar or bottle. It’s about what the scent gives back. I want every fragrance to transport you somewhere comforting and beautiful, whether that’s a café in Paris, a garden in Provence, or a sunlit street in the south of France.

For me, this work has never been only about business. It’s about love, ritual, and healing poured into every batch. What started as a way to find light in my own darkness has become a way to share that light with others. And if my products give someone even a small moment of peace, that’s what makes it all worth it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not really. I don’t think any creative path ever is, and living with chronic illness adds another layer of challenge. Some days I can pour, label, and pack orders from start to finish. Other days I have to step back completely and rest. Learning to build a business around that kind of unpredictability has been one of the hardest parts.

There have also been plenty of the usual small business struggles such as figuring out packaging, finding the right suppliers, managing costs, and trying to grow while keeping everything handmade and personal. In the beginning, it felt like I was doing a hundred jobs at once, and honestly, I still am most days.

What’s helped is learning to give myself grace and to focus on progress instead of perfection. Every obstacle has taught me something about patience and balance. It’s not always easy, but it’s real. And that’s a big part of my story, finding light and beauty even when things aren’t smooth or simple.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create small-batch home and body products that are meant to bring calm, comfort, and beauty into everyday life. I handcraft candles, room sprays, rollerball fragrances, all-purpose cleaners, laundry detergents, wax melts, and soaps, all made with care and intention. Every product starts with a simple idea: how can scent make someone feel at ease, inspired, or transported, even for just a moment.

What I’m most proud of is the heart behind it all. This business grew out of my own need for peace while living with chronic illness, and that perspective shapes everything I do. I understand what it means to crave small moments of relief, so I pour that energy into every batch. My goal isn’t just to make something that smells good, it’s to create something that makes people feel good.

I think what sets my work apart is the intentionality. Nothing is mass-produced or rushed. Every fragrance is tested, blended, and hand-poured in small quantities to make sure it feels balanced and meaningful. I also draw inspiration from travel (places I have been and places I want to go) and simple sensory experiences, the warmth of a café, the smell of fresh linen, the sweetness of a quiet morning. Those details help each scent tell a story.

At the end of the day, my work is about connection. It’s about creating products that remind people to slow down, take a deep breath, and find beauty in small, ordinary moments. That’s what I love most about what I do.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating products that are safe, honest, and bring a little bit of happiness into someone’s day. I’m really mindful about what goes into each candle, spray, or cleaner because I want people to feel good about what they’re using in their homes and on their bodies. Clean ingredients and quality matter to me because I know how much our surroundings affect how we feel.

But beyond that, I care about how my products make people feel. I want someone to light a candle or spray a fragrance and instantly feel calmer or more at peace. I want my work to remind people to slow down and enjoy the small moments.

At the heart of it, my goal is pretty simple: to make safe, beautiful products that help people feel a little lighter and happier. If I can do that, then I’m doing what I set out to do.
