Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Dillman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest in photography came at a pivotal age. I picked up a camera at fourteen, initially taking photos around the neighborhood and of my family. My attraction to music photography drove me to shoot my first show in July of 2014. At fourteen, I was definitely the youngest person in the photo pit. But early start gave me the benefit of having more time to go out and practice taking photos and editing. Consistency paid off, and soon my photos were being used by local bands for album artwork and t-shirt designs. By the time I was fifteen, I was contributing regularly for an online publication, Acentric Magazine. I got to where I am today by staying humble and knowing that I’m not entitled to anything. I don’t expect to get special treatment or to get in for free. I always try to be consistent, posting photos in the same format, in the same time frame and in the same place after every show.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There’s a common misconception that getting an opportunity is about who you know, but it’s really about who knows you. Starting out I did have a problem gathering up the guts to go talk to a band after their set, especially because I was fourteen and didn’t know anyone. But I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish anything in the music scene if I didn’t introduce myself to people show them where to find my work. You can’t assume people will just come to you.
Zoe Dillman Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Zoe Dillman Photography specializes in music photography. I am proud to say that I am self-taught, particularly from such a young age. I like how consistent I am able to be with my work and how frequent I am able to photograph shows. As of today, I have photographed over 400 bands/artists and 140 concerts in less than four years. I believe that my rapid turnaround time sets me apart from other local photographers. I always have my photos up within 48 hours of a show.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
If you want something done right, be prepared to do all the work yourself.
