Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Lopez.
Zoe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always known that I was meant to be a creative or an artsy person. For the longest time, I never knew what I wanted to do when I got out of high school. I just knew that I wanted to go to college and study a subject that I was incredibly passionate about. All of my friends had everything planned out, and I, of course, was the one who couldn’t make up my mind. One day, I was on YouTube and I had a random urge to look up makeup tutorial videos. Before that, I was never really a huge makeup person, but I did wear the occasional mascara and lip gloss. The first beauty influencer I ever watched was Nikkie Tutorials, and she taught me so much just within such a small amount of time. Her makeup routine and final look were flawless, and after that, I thought to myself, “This is what I want to do.”
From that day on, I drowned myself in more makeup tutorials and I started getting better at my own makeup since I practiced pretty much every single day. Tati Westbrook, Jeffree Star, and Nikkie, of course, became a part of my daily routine. I got to the point where I was so comfortable doing my own makeup that I actually wanted to try to do someone else’s. That’s where my best friend came in. Kaitlin Hays is a photographer for her own business Wonderstruck Photography, and she and I have always had the idea to collaborate in some way due to both of us being creatives. One day, she asked me if I wanted to be the makeup artist for one of her photo shoots, and I said yes immediately. Since then, she and I have been working together, and it’s nothing short of a dream come true. Through our work together, my ideas and creations are coming to life and I could not ask for anything better.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a makeup artist isn’t as simple as one might think. There are days where I create a new look and I absolutely hate it, and there are other days where I think I’ve created one of the best looks I’ve ever done. Nothing is ever perfect, but when I see the final outcome, it’s worth all of the struggles I’ve ever had to deal with during the process. There are even sometimes where I think the makeup I’ve done for a photo shoot could have been much better if I added some glitter or blended the eyeshadow a little bit more, because as a makeup artist, I’m constantly thinking about how to make the makeup look cohesive with the setting of the photo shoots. Even though there have been both ups and downs, I wouldn’t trade what I do for the world.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I would have never thought I would get to this point about a year ago. I am a self-taught makeup artist and I love what I do. Bringing out the confidence in my clients always brings a smile to my face. I’ve always loved helping people, and to do that through something I’m so passionate about is truly amazing. Amongst my friends, I’m definitely known as being the girl who’s obsessed with makeup! I’m honestly so proud of my skill growth over the past year because it means that I just keep getting better and better every day.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The DFW area is a great place to start and have a business. There are so many endless opportunities for young creators like myself, and I would definitely recommend for anyone to create their own business there.
