Today we’d like to introduce you to Zondra Evans.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I spent 40 years on the corporate leadership track, always the only African-American woman in top leadership roles. In my early years, I became a mentor because 40 years ago, there were no business coaches. I realized that I was good at it. It wasn’t just happening in the corporate environment. Everywhere I went, I was having the same conversations with people. I kept encouraging people to “be themselves.” I was constantly being sought out to coach and mentor. I never realized that I could turn it into a paying career. I was just doing what came naturally to me, for free. Five years ago, I became certified so I could help even more people find their destiny, and discover something even greater inside of themselves. Life is full of circumstances, and I’ve discovered that these circumstances are preparation for new opportunities.
I became my mother’s caregiver and took care of her for 15 years while balancing my family & career. I started speaking and sharing my own story and was asked to speak, again and again, even being paid to travel up to Alaska. I was asked to share my story as the first chapter of an anthology. The more I shared my personal story, the more vulnerable I got, the more opportunities showed up. Being a published author, speaker, being interviewed on radio & television, and now, I’m being asked to start my own Roku television channel.
Has it been a smooth road?
This is not the direction I thought I’d be on. I lost my job. I was my mother’s caregiver for 15 years. I never thought I would write a story about my mother. I was able to start a non-profit that helped disadvantaged women. I never thought I’d be invited to speak to audiences or be paid to travel and speak.
It wasn’t any one thing, but the combination of .my life circumstances is what propelled me to be able to walk this journey.
It gets tough at times being a solo-preneur. Just when I think I’m alone, so many people show up with gifts and talents at just the right time. I recognize all of these people as the momentum to stay focused on my journey. It’s like the perfect “pop-up” card – great things keep “popping up” all around me, bringing me joy and excitement.
And that’s why I wrote the book “The Power of Investing In You.” It is to help women, navigate the terse waters of their journey. Understanding that the most valuable resource in life is yourself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Coach Zondra story. Tell us more about the business.
I like to be able to give people something to put on their blank canvas to begin their journey. I feel like “Real Talk with Zondra” is the “floodlight approach” to starting your journey. With a floodlight, you can see everything in front of you, what’s coming your way and begin to navigate your journey. With “Coach Zondra”, you get more of the “flashlight approach”, where we can focus in on the most crucial element.
What I’m most proud of is that it doesn’t matter if I’m speaking to one person or to 100, it’s about the message that I share. I get to encourage, inspire, and motivate. I get to make a difference. There’s power in investing in you. When you feel the power, you’ll be encouraged to continue on your own mission.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the Real Talk channel as a global network, touching lives all over the world. The ability to touch many becomes a reality, thanks to technology and streaming TV. People around the globe will have access to experience coaching on-demand.
