We’re looking forward to introducing you to Richa Mittal . Check out our conversation below.
Richa, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Studying for and passing my Menopause Society certification examination!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a physician with a passion for prevention. I love helping people live their purpose and achieve good health to live well. Whether in my practice or through education on my social media platforms, blog and community talks, helping others with a personalized, science-based approach is important to me.
When I started my practice 7 years ago, I decided to create something unique and out of the box (but much needed!)- personalized preventive and weight management care! By incorporating comprehensive medical evaluations with personalized and science based treatment plans (both medical and lifestyle), it has been a privilege to help so many patients in an effective way. I am proud of the long-term relationships I have with my patients.
Within the membership model set up of my practice, I am able to care for people between visits, address mindset and behaviors and help navigate practical hurdles, as well as monitor medical issues. Most recently, I am have now added midlife women’s peri/menopause care to my services. I am able to provide the care and tools to help midlife women not only with weight and metabolic health, but also to help them feel their best! We have also moved to a new office space, allowing us to grow and create a warm and healing space for our patients.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents have always been my biggest supporters! In a world ready to tear us down, make us doubt ourselves and find our faults, I appreciate having a steady presence of belief in my life. They have always made me feel confident, valued and capable of doing anything I put my mind to! I hope to be a source of support and confidence for my children in the same way.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure has held me back at certain times of my life. As a perfectionist and eldest daughter of immigrants, I have felt pressure to achieve.
I have also felt pressure to “do it all”- academically, in my career and as a wife and mother. Balancing it all and being the best at everything is a challenge and something I have let go of! When I started my practice, I had to start the process of letting go of my fear of failure- taking chances, trusting myself and knowing I have inherent value, regardless of my achievements has allowed me to learn and grow! I continue to work on knowing that the fear of failure exists but it does not need to hold me back or have control over me.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
The concept of fads is prevalent in my field- health and wellness is dominated by transient fads! I believe that real foundational shifts happen when we look at the daily, small steps we take everyday in whatever we do. Whether it comes to health habits like eating more healthfully or getting more physical activity or to learning new things that shift the needle in terms of our work and family life, consistent small steps are the key.
Fads come and go. They don’t last forever and they are typically not sustainable. Focusing on progress over perfection, small wins, embracing not being perfect and seeking the real rewards of our choices helps us make real foundational shifts in our lives.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Through my own journey and those of my patients, I understand deeply that comparison is the thief of joy. Comparing yourself to others and believing they are better or have it easier than you is one of the ways I see people hurt their own efforts for change. We don’t know what is really going on with others- people convey and show what they want others to see. Everyone faces challenges, no one is perfect, we all have our wounds and in the end we all have our gifts. Letting go of comparison lets us appreciate our own wins when we accomplish something, allows us to not be as harsh in self judgement and allows to have value for the people we are.
