Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Lopez.
Hi Adriana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was in my mid-20s I worked in my family’s business. I grew up around a lot of Finished Carpentry “tios” and decided to join my uncle’s business after I got my MBA. I’ve always loved learning and took it upon myself to learn everything about my uncle’s business – from ordering materials to preparing contracts. I eventually started managing some of the company’s biggest projects from start to finish and told myself one day I would learn to use all those tools I saw the workers using.
I ended up leaving my family’s business and going back to school for something completely different, but the love for wanting to learn how to use power tools never went away.
During the pandemic when we were all at home and the only stores open besides grocery stores, were the big box stores, I started doing small DIY projects around my home and decided to create an account on Instagram where I could share these projects. At the time I didn’t realize content creation was even a thing. Fast forward to today, this journey has given me the opportunity to partner with some of the brands I only knew by name because they were brands of tools or supplies I saw on jobsites. DIY in general has been a really great outlet for me as a special needs mom and it gives me the opportunity to teach and inspire other women.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being in a field that is male dominated (construction and home improvement) comes with its challenges – from people who don’t think women should be doing this type of work to people who criticize the way you do things. Putting myself out there on social media has helped me develop thicker skin. I have a really great community on Instagram who supports me and appreciates the things I share and that is what fuels me to keep going. That and my kids who see me as their mom who “fixes everything.” I want my kids to develop the confidence that they can grow up to be whoever they want to be and do whatever they want to do for a living.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Latina DIY content creator. I share a lot of home improvement/home maintenance tips. I am proud that as an immigrant who came to this country with very little, I had a very supportive mom who encouraged me to get an education and never stop learning! I proudly hold 3 degrees – from an associate’s to a master’s. And believe it or not every job I have been able to exercise my degrees in has prepared me for the world of content creation and how to show professionalism when dealing with well-known brands.
