Rising Stars: Meet Alex Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Hughes

Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I studied graphic design in college and got a job in the industry after graduation.

Shortly after that, I started my block printing business, Wandering Paper Co., as a creative outlet. It was a nice way to do something different and work with my hands after designing on the computer all day. I love to travel, so I decided to create block prints inspired by the places I visited.

Fast-forward ten years, and after completing my master’s degree from Savannah College of Art and Design, I expanded my business to include brand strategy and graphic design in addition to block printing and collage illustration.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been challenges. A big one for me is picking one area of focus for my business and sticking with it. I love to experiment and learn new things, and I get bored easily. That can be helpful in some ways, but it also creates challenges when trying to build brand awareness and create a unified portfolio.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I grew up with a love for travel, which continues to inspire my work as a designer and printmaker. I try to capture the essence of my travels through my prints and illustrations and pay special attention to shape and color to reflect a specific place. I love to work with my hands and use physical materials, and I think that sets my work apart, especially in today’s digital age. I try to embrace the imperfect, handmade quality in my work that shows my hand in making it.

My background informs my work as I approach it from the perspective of a graphic designer as well as a fine artist. I approach my creative practice with a client’s perspective in mind, and I enjoy connecting with others through my work.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the community here in DFW! I really enjoy meeting other artists and creatives, especially people who use a different medium or have a different background than I do. It’s so rewarding to share knowledge and to learn from each other.
