Rising Stars: Meet April Joiles of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Joiles

Hi April, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My artistic journey,I believe started from birth. Growing up in Jamaica that was very interesting to navigate but I knew I was set apart. It started with my love for colors and all things beauty. My love for makeup birthed through insecurity and also the wonders of color. I have struggled with acne all my life, makeup was my way of expressing my beauty when I felt like my skin was betraying me. I realized the power of beauty and I wanted to master that craft to empower people who faced similar insecurities. My journey as a makeup artist started in 2018 as a favor to a friend which led with great favor in return. I was mentored by a well known Jamaican known photographer and worked along side the company for 4 years. After completing my Bachelors in Fashion I decided to merge my love for makeup and fashion. I started freelancing and that was when my career took off. Briefly between travels I would work with a media agency and that opened opportunities for me to do commercial and editorial makeup. In June 2022 I migrated to the US and approximately a year later I was offered a job as a brand representative for The Danessa Myricks Beauty. I now represent the brand in the DFW area and also freelance as a makeup artist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When it comes to being a creative there are many doubt that comes with the uncertainty of how this passion is going to be profitable. I started doing makeup professionally while I was in college and that in itself was challenging due to lack of resources. I could not afford to have a fully stocked kit one because of financial lack and two because there wasn’t enough makeup options available in Jamaica. Once I overcame that obstacle and I moved to the States it has been difficult finding my footing as an artist in a new environment. I did not settle in Dallas until last year October so before that I was traveling a lot which made it nearly impossible to practice makeup professionally. Now that I am here I am doing my best to navigate this city and find my footing as an artist.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional makeup artist and stylist. I specialize in editorial and soft glam makeup artistry. I find joy in educating my community about makeup and how they can navigate this huge market by helping them find products and teaching them techniques that uniquely makes them more beautiful. I believe my ability to reach others no matter what gender, identity or race makes me set apart. I represent one the most impactful artist in the world and I believe in remaining a student and that has allowed me to become a good teacher. I also show up authentically no matter what.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Dallas is very different from where I was previously residing and I find it so peaceful and slow pace. I appreciate the multicultural environment and the authenticity of the people. It is difficult coming from the Caribbean to a city where there is a small community of us compared to other states.
