Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Miller.
Avery, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sure! I’ve always found joy in creating. Maybe everyone does in some capacity. Creating something, from nothing, and it being able to evoke feeling, feels like a superpower.
I grew up with the notion that artists were lost, undriven people, with a fluctuating career that they had to beg for daily. I was encouraged to go into the medical field, you know, “something stable” so I did as I was told, and I became a speech pathologist. I worked happily helping little ones for about 5 years and I dabbled in art on the side, still creating in some way or another. It wasn’t until 2018 when a college friend of mine asked, “Will you paint at my wedding?”. I said, “sure, but what in the world do you mean?!” This was still a new, up and coming service, so I had never heard of it. With a few weeks’ notice, I scraped together the required supplies, threw on a fancy dress and put on the best show I could! I had no idea that would be the first day of my new “career” as a live wedding painter.
As of 2020, I gave my resignation and jumped in full-time as an artist. Something that still feels weird to call myself. It doesn’t quite feel like I’ve earned it. Yet, for the past 5 years I have grown my small business into a thriving art career, filled with thousands of commissions, numerous awards, successful charity events, fun corporate celebrations, and over 100 weddings!
This year, I want to continue serving my community and surrounding cities by coming up with new ways to incorporate art into their big events. Whether that be live murals, guest portraits, painting on unique items like guitars, wood, or old records – whatever the element, it should be FUN. I want my art to still evoke feelings but maybe a little more playful and a lottt more interactive! Recently I introduced a new feature for brand launches, company celebrations, baby showers, (or any party really), which is “Live Guest Interactive Paint-By-Numbers”. With this new service, guests can join together to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art, which is polished up by me in my studio and ready to hang on the wall to encapsule the event’s memories forever.
Big things are ahead, and I can’t wait to bring them all back to the Dallas area. This East Texas native, loves to travel all over, but Texas will always be my home. I’m so proud of myself, proud to be a part of this industry, and proud to be called an “artist”.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is starting a business from scratch ever smooth? Haha
I think the most difficult thing about being a small business owner is the work life balance. I’m still working through this every day and getting better at it as I go.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Right now, I specialize in live wedding and event paintings, with guest interactive features that bring the party to life. I love that my service is one that you can experience and enjoy the day-of your event, as well as for the many years after as you view your painting on your wall.
Something that sets me apart is that I love to get creative and paint on things that aren’t always a canvas. For example, at the end of last year, I painted on a guitar for a rehearsal dinner in Nashville, Tennessee, and I’ve even painted on a tree trunk! I want the artwork to be an experience, not just a keepsake.
As far as what I’m most proud of, well that’s a different kind of art: I’m a mom of three little ones and have been married for 7 years to my college sweetheart (Wreck’em Tech). I pride myself on going “all in” in every aspect of my life, including being the best mother I can be. I love to spend time in nature, travel with my family, and laugh alongside my sweet babies.
How do you define success?
Contentment.
I don’t know that there is a particular bar that I have set to feel that I’ve been “successful”. Right now, the fact that I’m running a thriving business as a full-time mother, while keeping the children, pets, home and friendships alive is a WIN to me. 🙂
