Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Lopez.
Hi Barbara , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first picked up a camera during my freshman year of high school simply for fun, without any real expectations. As I kept shooting, I was given the opportunity to be my school’s football photographer, which became a turning point for me. Being on the field and capturing the intensity and emotion of the game helped me find my style, and it also allowed me to start getting recognized through sports photography. What began as a hobby quickly turned into a real passion, and that’s when I knew photography was something I wanted to grow and take seriously.
Being completely self-taught, I spent countless hours learning on my own—experimenting with different styles, practicing whenever I could, and improving through trial and error. I pushed myself to put my work out there and say yes to new opportunities, which helped me expand beyond sports. Over time, I began photographing seniors, couples, weddings, and many other types of sessions, allowing me to grow creatively and work with a wide range of people. My friends played a huge role in my growth by believing in me and spreading the word about my photography, which helped me reach new people and build confidence in my work.
Now, at 19 years old, I’m a freshman in college, continuing to develop both creatively and personally and my family is my biggest source of inspiration—they motivate me to stay consistent, work hard, and keep chasing my goals. Photography has become more than just something I enjoy; it’s a major part of who I am and the future I’m building.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of my biggest struggles was having to step out of my comfort zone. Putting myself out there, talking to new people, and promoting my work didn’t come naturally to me at first, and it was something I had to slowly learn and grow into. There were moments where self-doubt made things feel even harder, especially in the beginning.
Another challenge was finding my own style—something that truly felt like me. It took time, experimentation, and patience to figure out what set my work apart and what I wanted my photos to say. There were times when I compared myself to others or felt unsure about my direction, but those struggles pushed me to keep practicing and refining my vision. Looking back, those challenges helped shape not only my photography, but also my confidence and growth as a creative.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work focuses on capturing real moments and genuine connections. I photograph seniors, families, couples, weddings, and many other types of sessions, which allows me to work with a wide range of people and stories. I’m known as Photos By Barbara a photographer based in Frisco, Texas, and I take pride in creating images that feel natural, meaningful, and true to the people in them rather than overly posed or forced.
What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come, especially stepping outside of my comfort zone. From being shy at the start to now confidently working with clients, each experience has helped me grow. I’m also proud that I’m able to give advice and help new photographers who may be starting out and feeling the same way I once did. Investing in my own equipment was another big milestone for me—it showed my commitment to my craft and belief in myself. What sets me apart is my willingness to keep learning, support others, and bring passion and authenticity into every session I shoot.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, my plans are to continue growing my photography business even bigger and pushing myself to new levels creatively and professionally. I want to build a strong, recognizable brand and become more known for my work, both locally and beyond. Photography isn’t just a passion for me—it’s something I see as a long-term career.
I’m also focused on using my business to help pay for my college education, which motivates me to stay consistent and work hard. I’m looking forward to expanding my opportunities, meeting new people, and taking on bigger projects that challenge me. Overall, I’m excited about what’s ahead and committed to continuing to grow, learn, and make a name for myself through my work.
