Today we’d like to introduce you to Beau Simmons.
Beau, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a photographer for 17 years, from the age of 16. I worked as a fashion photographer for nearly ten years in Los Angeles and NYC. I then transitioned into documenting the Western lifestyle and have been photographing cowboys on some of the biggest ranches in America for six years now. These ranches include the King Ranch and 6666 Ranch along with photographing the creator and writer of hit TV series, Yellowstone’s, Taylor Sheridan. My artworks are represented in galleries all over the country, including Markowicz Fine Art in Dallas, TX.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Most of the struggles have been working over the years to be granted access to some of these private ranches. My goal has been to not only just take photos but to earn their trust and respect by learning how to work on horseback and help them with daily operations. To truly learn their lifestyle, which in return makes me a better photographer in this culture
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer who specializes in medium and large-format film photography. I use cameras from the 80s and then have my work developed in a darkroom. The film negatives are then drum scanned, allowing us to print archival pigment prints, which then get framed as artworks and are showcased in galleries. The prints last over hundreds of years based on the high-quality materials we use along with the archival pigment process. I believe my work stands out to other artists because I’m using a traditional medium in a digital age. My work has a higher quality to it and helps honor those who love the Western or equestrian lifestyle. I also cut up my film negatives and each piece is attached to the Certificate of Authenticity each collector receives upon purchasing my work. It’s a way to ensure my collectors that my work will never be reproduced again, and each artwork is limited to only 10 prints no matter the size. These are very limited-edition artworks in the fine art photography world.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Staying authentic to myself and those around me. I believe that by highlighting the modern-day cowboy and those who live this lifestyle daily it helps educate the rest of our society on the hard work they put into feeding the rest of us. I also strive to be humble in my work and help find a way for each of my artworks to tell a story and help connect each viewer to feel a sense of joy or happiness from them.
