Rising Stars: Meet Benny Jackson of Post, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benny Jackson.

Hi Benny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I learned to love a beautiful space from my grandmother. From early childhood I found myself caring about aesthetics and beauty. Instead of wanting to go toy shopping, I wanted to go to the flower nurseries. In junior high, I traded my mom’s furniture in at the local furniture store and redecorated our home while she was at work. Then I worked part time in our family business to pay it out on credit. As I got older, I found a niche for pleasing clients by creating spaces they loved; spaces that reflected their personal style and journey. I listen. I dream. I execute. It is rewarding work when I leave a home better than I found it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Work is called work for a reason. It’s hard. It’s backbreaking (or in my case, knee breaking.) I don’t have a team. It’s me and my wife typically. And, just like life, there is ebb and flow. There are times when the phone rings off the wall, and other times when the silence is deafening. But it’s been a rewarding career for almost forty years.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a freelance designer. I work off of a paper calendar (seriously). Old school. I originally got my start creating custom florals and that grew into designing spaces and full time decorating. And although floral design has changed over the years, I still find it’s an integral part of my business. The idea is the same, but the style has evolved. It is always my hope that a custom piece looks natural and alive, not stiff or contrived. Many times I begin with a new client because they needed a floral design and it turns into a comprehensive new space or dream organically.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success if pleasing the customer. I don’t have to love the home or the room to feel I did a great job. Many designers can create a magazine cover space that looks like them. I create a balanced space that reflects my client and how they live and how they want to feel in their home. I’m not good at creating cookie cutter homes. I’m eclectic. I love diversity and unique spaces. I love using items that have special meaning…items from travel or grandparents, objects that have memories and fondness attached to them. When a client can find peace and joy in their home, I am successful.
