Rising Stars: Meet Brennon Holbrook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brennon Holbrook.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was about 16 when I first found a passion for photography. Some friends and I had gone into Dallas to see an exhibition at the DMA. One of my friends had brought their new camera with them. He was going on about how much fun photography was. I was at this point pretty curious so I asked to try it out. He handed over the camera and gave me a few pointers on how to take a photo. I started snapping photos of whatever caught my eye. We were waiting for our train home when I spotted a sharply dressed man just a few yards down from us on the platform. I held up the camera and snapped the image. I remember looking at the picture on the back LCD filled with overwhelming sense of accomplishment. I knew right then I wanted to be a photographer. From that moment I eat, slept, and breathed photography. I took every class or internship I could. I knew if I wanted to be a great photographer I need to learn from as many different sources as I could. Every day I try to learn something new about photography and it has helped me to craft my ability into what it is today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with anything in this world, there are always ups and downs. The biggest hurdle I found was first learning to put value to my services and not backing down from it. As a new photographer, it was hard to gage what my skill was worth. Around every corner, there is someone who will do it for less or for free.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography. To me, people are the most interesting thing on our planet. Everyone has a story to tell and I strive for my work to reflect their unique message. When I work with a subject I like to talk and get to know them throughout the process. I utilize communication to get a deeper understanding of the particular person I am capturing. So that in the end my photo might reflect their personality and in turn, allow me to craft a one-of-a-kind image. I base every detail of the photograph on my conversation with the subject. Lighting, background, whether or not I use film or digital. All in the pursuit of capturing the human spirit like no one has before.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The most important factor of my work is capturing what I feel is an accurate representation of my subject. I will schedule multiple sessions with a subject if I feel like the photo does not contain at least some essence of who they are as a person.
