Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Barnett of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Barnett.

Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Like many of my peers in the industry, the start of my career was not very conventional. After graduating college in 2008 with a B.A. in Journalism and Communications, I had no idea I would end up where I am now. A friend of mine that worked for the Memphis Grizzlies, invited me to an audition for the In-Game Entertainment team. I went and ended up with the role of Mascot Handler. I learned the ropes of production and from that moment on I knew it was a career I wanted to pursue. I made great connections, built strong relationships and by 2010, I relocated to Atlanta, GA to step into the role of Game Ops Assistant for the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Dream (WNBA). I held that role for two years, before I landed an internship with the Women’s NCAA Final Four in 2013 managing all the event logistics for their High School All-American exhibition game. From then on, over the years, I kept networking, and eventually landed what would be one of my most accomplished career accolades and roles to date, Associate Producer for the 2019 Super Bowl Live Fan Fest. That was the opportunity that inevitably catapulted me to where I am today, Since 2018, I have made my way to Dallas and have garnered relationships with brands such as Nike, Adidas, Google, Bose and United Masters that have entrusted me to bring their vision to life for large scale corporate conferences, summits, festivals and experiential events. I would not be where I am today without relationships, supporters and my own drive and determination to be the best at what I do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
By no means has it been a smooth road. There were definitely moments of low and not knowing if this was really something that would sustain me. To build up my resume, I had to take on roles that were low paying or even sometimes not being paid at all, just to get the experience that I needed. The most difficult time of my career had to have been during Covid. The industry that I am in mostly depends on the public being open. At the time, virtual events were not yet a thing, so when the world shut down, so did all of the live events. I was out of work for almost a year before, brands and technology figured out how to produce events online. Aside from that, like many industries, being a woman amongst a crew full of men can be intimidating so I have had to do a little extra work to show and prove that I am just as experienced and deserve respect.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Live events can be very complexed with many moving parts and various different roles to be played before, during and after. Some of the key players you immediately see like a camera operator and some you never know where they are but yet still making the show/event run smoothly. I am an Executive Producer and Show Caller. What do these roles do? Well, as an Executive Producer, my expertise is to take a brand/client idea and bring into real life. I choose the location, the host, the talent, collaborate on stage design, lighting, sound and all the details you see to create an experience. In addition to that, I am a Show Caller, which is really the conductor that makes it all happen right on time. You would never really see me as the Show Caller because most times, I am behind the scenes. I am on a headset with the show crew telling them when to play content on the screen, flash lights, play audio, camera shots, all from a perfectly timed cue sheet. It is one of the most nerve wrecking things to do but yet so exhilarating. What sets me apart from others is that you can see how much I love doing this, I show up 110% for all my clients with an attitude of excellence.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Wow! I have to think about this for a minute. My favorite childhood memory has to be going to my first concer to see Janet Jackson. I love her!
