Rising Stars: Meet Brother Prater

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brother Prater.

Brother Prater

Hi Brother Prater, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Brother Prater. I am an author, minister, podcast host & law enforcer (for 30 years). I am also a spokesperson against domestic violence and toxic relationships. Sadly, March 3, 2019, my best friend & sister Sheila Prater was killed by her boyfriend. That moment made me have domestic violence as a top priority to talk to others about everywhere I could.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No indeed. 1st, the boy who killed my sister ended up in the jail that is attached to the jail I work at.

Also, I try to talk & minister to others with no bias.

I have minister to many of the victims as well as the abusers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My week is like this: I work Monday- Friday 7:00 am 3:30 pm. I travel 45 miles every other day to have visitation time with my son. I post daily Devotions & videos every day on social media, & I host my podcast (ReConnect My Heart Podcast) on Sunday 8 pm (CST).

I’m a proud father & I try to be an example to others on being a father who is single, a minister & someone who has dealt with grief or disappointments.

I am also an author of 2 books.

What sets you apart from others?
I have personal experience & have had the opportunity to be in positions that most people don’t know about or never experienced because of my law enforcement background

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Listen, listen, listen to what the person is saying & see if they are modeling what they are saying. Choose someone who is disciplined & consistent.

Be prayerful for God to reveal if the person you’re considering as a mentor meets his or her qualifications, holds you accountable & has your best interests in mind.
