Rising Stars: Meet Byron Portley of Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Byron Portley

Hi Byron, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the music industry began in 2009 when I purchased a Digital Audio Workstation “(DAW) program”, to create beats alongside my close friend, Wesley Johnson. Our passion for these beats led us to form the rap group 100 Born Fly in 2010. Although our time as performers was brief, this experience taught me the value of hard work and deepened my commitment to the music industry.

In 2011, I relocated to Dallas and enrolled at the Art Institute of Dallas, focusing on audio production and digital filmmaking. Despite not completing my formal education, my thirst for knowledge remained unquenched. I continued to educate myself about the intricacies of the music business, which culminated in the founding of Impulse Entertainment in 2017.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Embarking on the journey of establishing Impulse Entertainment has indeed been fraught with challenges, but I firmly believe that these obstacles are integral to the path of growth and success. The music industry lacks a definitive blueprint, and much of my learning has come through navigating various hurdles. Along the way, I’ve encountered roadblocks, untrustworthy individuals, and those more interested in personal gain than in genuinely supporting artists. However, each of these experiences has been a lesson, contributing to my resilience and determination.

The journey of running an independent record label is undeniably demanding, requiring long hours, dedication, and persistence. Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. I continue to learn and grow, staying focused on the ultimate goal: to be a successful company that truly supports and uplifts artists.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in advertising and marketing strategies tailored to help artists connect with audiences both regionally and nationwide. Our comprehensive approach includes leveraging social media platforms for storytelling and artist promotion, utilizing email marketing for direct fan engagement, collaborating with influencers to widen audience reach, investing in targeted digital advertising campaigns, creating engaging content that resonates with target demographics, hosting live events or virtual listening parties to create buzz, and analyzing data to continually refine marketing strategies.

By implementing these strategies, I aim to build a strong local presence for our artists, which can serve as a foundation for broader national recognition. My goal is to empower artists by providing the resources and support necessary to reach and engage their target audiences effectively.

My dedication to consistently marketing artists and effectively targeting their audiences over the past few years is indeed commendable. This sustained effort not only fosters trust and recognition but also lays the foundation for long-term success. By maintaining a cohesive and consistent approach, I’m ensuring that the artists’ brands remain visible and resonate with their intended audiences. Consistency is pivotal in shaping audience perception and building lasting relationships. My commitment to this strategy is clearly yielding positive growth, and it’s inspiring to see the tangible results of the hard work put in. I’m super proud of that! lol.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the rise of virtual concerts are indeed shaping the future of music.

AI is revolutionizing various aspects of the music industry, from creation to distribution. Musicians and songwriters now have the ability to generate content rapidly, synthesize vocals, and isolate elements within tracks using AI tools.

The landscape of live music is also undergoing a transformation with the advent of virtual and hybrid concerts. These virtual events not only allow artists to reach global audiences but also offer sustainable alternatives by reducing the need for travel and lowering carbon emissions.

Staying informed and adaptable to these technological advancements is crucial for navigating the future of the music industry. Embracing AI and virtual concert trends can open new avenues for creativity and audience engagement, ensuring that artists and industry professionals remain at the forefront of this evolving landscape. So yes! Big changes!
