Today we’d like to introduce you to Camereon Smith.
Hi Camereon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was an actor before I got into comedy. I was doing a play called 50 cent jewelry line where I met Corey cherry, I always knew I was funny I didn’t believe I was comedian funny but I always loved stand up. when I met Corey doing the play he said he did comedy I told him a joke he didn’t laugh but he told me to come to a mic and try. I denied his advances until he asked me to do a skit for his promo, which is the first time I ever went inside of a comedy club when I got in there I saw some guys bombing and I said oh so if you are not having a good night you don’t get boo’d they just don’t laugh and I tried for the first time
The next week after that I’ve been doing it ever since. I’m 17 months in now
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had to find my voice and how to genuinely find my lane on what to talk about thus far it has been pretty smooth the hardest part was convincing the other comedians I was the real thing. My comedy is a pretty sensitive subject matter my kids are on the spectrum and my fiancée isn’t fond of what the world may say about my children or other people in the community, so my biggest thing was giving them a voice cause even people in our situation deserve a laugh
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a comedian. I believe I specialize in bringing people together I’ve always had that knack, I was always a class clown if you meet some people I grew up with they would tell you me being a comedian is not that far fetched. I just love to put smiles on peoples faces. They say laughter is the best medicine, and whenever I’m around that’s what I wanna spend my time doing giving people a reason to smile or a reason to believe. What I am most proud of are my children my son Shiloh and my daughter Ayden they are both on the Autism spectrum and they get up every and live this life with any fear they are truly my heroes. I look at them everyday and think to myself how lucky am I to be your dad and the responsibility God has bestowed upon me, it’s not always easy but it’s worth it. I’m proud of my fiancée Jasmine I know our situation takes a toll on her she’s been a stay at home mom for the most part, but she always finds energy for our children and even more to help me chase my dream of being one of the biggest and best comics in the world. She just graduated college in May and I couldn’t be more proud of her she’ll be getting her bachelor’s in the next few years and to go through what she’s been through I can do nothing but applaud and be proud. Last but not least I’m proud of me I’ve been in some dark spaces. I’ve dealt with depression weight loss, I lost my initial dream of being a ball player. Even when I was down I wasn’t out I provided for my family. I was the father I never had. I was a partner, soon to be husband that my mother, grandmother, sister and every woman that helped raise me could be proud of. Man I don’t look like what I been through. Well other than me being fat lmao, but seriously I’m so proud of myself and I’m sure the younger version of myself would be like man you finally figuring it out. So those are the main things I’m proud of. I love you Jasmine Young. I love you Shiloh Smith. I love you Ayden Smith. What I feel like sets me apart from others is I’m willing to do the work and moving forward I refuse to ever get back down and take no for an answer. I’ve come to far to stop now. When I get home and see my family I think to myself “I can’t let them or myself down, this can’t be for nothing.” So I have the ambition and the why to take this thing where I want to take it. Nothing is going to stop me, as long as I got my family and Jesus, anything is possible
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I watch a lot of comedy, I write with my peers and we help each other with jokes the first book I read was the comedy bible by Judy Carter it helped me learn to form jokes. Right now I’m reading a book called, the way of a superior man. I feel like I do pretty decent at being a man but you can never learn to much I can always grow at being a father being a fiancée/Husband. Being a better person so these days I’m reading more self help books to become the ultimate person I wanna be.
