Rising Stars: Meet Cody Havlice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Havlice.

Hi Cody, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Cody Havlice, an artist and marketing student at the University of North Texas. I was Houston born and raised and was brought up in a unique environment. Both my parents are firefighters, and I grew up next to NASA, watching rockets being tested during some of my cross-country meets. Many of my friends’ parents were engineers there, so the dynamic from my home life to theirs differed slightly. Fortunately, I always had at least one of my parents at home, and I am incredibly grateful for that luxury. I grew up passionate about creativity and art but never took it seriously. When graduation came near, I decided that going to college for business was my best route, so I graduated high school early and started college in 2020, which we all know how that worked.

Once I started my sophomore year, my roommate Kennedy reinvented the way I viewed art. She is a design major and seeing her projects and assignments inspired me to start creating art again after a dry spell of creativity in high school. Since then, I’ve made many pieces I’m extremely proud of, and hope to continue using my creativity to express myself.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would say smoother than most. I had the great privilege of two loving parents and a caring older sister at home to help me navigate life, each of them giving me the drive to continue forward and upward. I grew up Lutheran, and I’m grateful that faith was the foundation of my childhood. Many of the teachings and lessons helped me become the person I am today. However, I explored my spirituality on my own and have begun to understand my own beliefs and morals. The bumpy times came when I began to understand my own sexuality. Although there were sometimes when I felt discarded or ignored because of my identity, I continued to persist, and acceptance followed suit. I continue to thrive by having caring friends and a loving family, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the upbringing I had.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My works of art consist of attention to detail, precision, and color values. I am unfortunately red-green colorblind, which can impact the way I view my own pieces compared to others. Even though I view color differently, I continue to explore vibrant shades and values to prove my creative abilities. I continue to be obsessed with hue, high chroma, and clean lines. I create pieces that give the viewer an aesthetic balance throughout the entirety of each piece. Over the last year, I became entranced by the power of color gradients on a canvas and began exploring what I could create if the technique were perfected. Recently, I’ve been more casual with my art, focusing on my schooling and future career paths. Yet, I continue to be inspired by others’ work and can’t wait to see my artistic abilities flourish over the next few years.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love to share my work on my Instagram or feel free to email me if you have any questions or just want to chat. I almost always accept a commission or collaborative work and would love to help your ideas come true. I attend markets occasionally and will be a vendor at the Denton Makers festival this year! April 29th don’t miss it!
