Rising Stars: Meet Dace Kidd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dace Kidd. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Dace Kidd

Dace Kidd (b. 1987 in Riga, Latvia) is a Latvian/American visual artist working primarily in the media of oil and acrylic on canvas and large site-specific installations and murals. Dace (pronounced “Dot-sa”) completed her degree at the Art Academy of Latvia in Riga and received advanced training for two years at Accademia di belli Arti in Palermo, Italy. Her installations, paper sculptures, and large-scale drawings and paintings are better known in Europe. After moving to the United States in 2011, she began creating murals and has become a successful commission and portrait artist. In 2017, she established the Mural Artist TX brand and has traveled all over Texas to create murals for individuals, businesses, and municipalities. She also designs graphics and books and has provided the cover art and illustrations for many. She has had successful shows throughout Europe, from Venice to Berlin to Amsterdam, and has exhibited artwork in New York City and Miami. She works on site-specific projects, regularly shows her work, and curates art events in Tyler and Dallas, Texas. The City of Tyler has recruited her to help with the State Designated Cultural District status acquisition.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I truly had a culture shock when I moved to Texas from Europe. I didn’t have a driver’s license; I spoke English with a heavy British and Northern-Eastern accent. I could tell that it was very hard for Texans to understand me. I was also very shy and an introvert. I wanted to be an entrepreneur and have an impact on the community. Therefore, I had to gather all my courage, willpower, and discipline and work towards my goal. I could not have it done without the help of my loved ones and friends.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a classically trained studio artist, and I specialize in portraiture and custom artwork. I am an art junky, and I love and embrace any art style, from impressionism to realism, abstraction, minimalism, and pop art. Since 2017, I have been creating large-scale installations and murals for many individuals, businesses, and municipalities in Texas under the brand Mural Artist TX. Working on a large scale is very thrilling, and I very much enjoy the aspect of public art that so many see and are impacted by. I have handpainted one of the largest murals in Texas, which is 5200 square feet.

What does success mean to you?
When my client is happy with the mural, I already have the next project in planning.
