Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan C. Wright.
Dan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In a nutshell, my story is, I’m a Texas-born musician/producer/actor/writer, I’ve been writing music for TV and film for the past ten years. In 2011, I wrote the theme song to an MTV show called “Skins,” and since then, I’ve been featured in tons of other shows such as “Jersey Shore,” “Supergirl,” “Punk’d,” “The Goldbergs,” “Revenge,” “Catfish,” “Dr. Oz Show,” “Ray Donovan,” and countless others. My professional career started around the age of 15 when my pop-rock band at the time signed to a management company that quickly propelled us to working with Grammy-nominated producers on multiple records, touring the United States, and performing at the Van’s Warped tour in 2007 and 2008. When that group disbanded in 2009, I started my solo project, 3D FRIENDS.
I began releasing a handful of bedroom recordings on the internet, and it was about a year into that project when I released my song “Lina Magic” which caught the attention of MTV. I was flown out to New York to rework the track for TV and film the music video, which premiered on MTV to four million viewers (directly following the newest episode of Jersey Shore). Shortly after that, I signed my first publishing deal with Extreme Music (Sony ATV, Bleeding Fingers) and released my first full-length album “Imaginative Things.” I moved to Los Angeles at the end of 2015, where I became a working actor and have appeared in many films, shows, reality tv shows, and commercials. I’ve even been able to bridge my acting aspirations with my musical ones by securing music placements on shows and films that I’ve also appeared on as an actor. I recently joined forces with Fort Worth-based record label, Addictive Music Group, where I am honored to be contributing my knowledge and experience in the music industry. Helping other artists on their path in the music industry has been an unexpectedly very rewarding experience, and I love being a part of such a hardworking team.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think no matter what you do, life, in general, is always the “struggle along the way.” There were a lot of learning curves I had to overcome, and definitely a lot of personal issues and worries that I had to deal with to get to where I am today, but that’s just something we all have to deal with throughout life, no matter our age, or our achievements, or how much money we have. There’s always mistakes you make along the way, but they’re absolutely necessary, and all you can do is learn from them and keep moving forward. When I was in New York working on the theme song to “Skins,” MTV had set up a meeting for me with the manager of Passion Pit, Chromeo, Tokyo Police Club, and I remember leaving that meeting thinking, “Man, I really messed that up.” Despite my 6+ years of music experience at the time, I still felt so “green,” and I just felt like this young kid who just didn’t know what he was doing. I couldn’t help but feel like maybe if I had been more prepared or answered his questions differently, I’d be even further along in my musical career right now. I always struggled with overthinking situations, to the point that it became completely disabling for me. When life gets hard, it’s always easier to just retreat to this “safe place,” this comfort zone that lets you forget about all your worries, but I think that’s one of the most terrifying places to be because you’re not growing when you’re comfortable. Life is just filled with ups and downs, and as cliche as it sounds, that’s what makes us human, and it’s just part of being alive. It’s what motivates me to work harder, do better, and keep pushing myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Recently, I started working with Addictive Music Group. It’s a Fort Worth-based record label, founded by an absolute music genius, Morgan Matthews, that literally specializes in every aspect of the music industry. I get to talk to so many different artists, from all walks of life, from all over the world, and they’re all at different parts of their musical journey. I love being able to utilize what I’ve learned throughout my journey and offer guidance and help others get to the next level of their career. I know what it’s like feeling lost and confused in the industry and just wishing that you had someone that can help. And so that’s what I strive to do for every artist that I speak to. There’s so much noise, so much clutter, so much confusion when you’re trying to make it as an artist, so I try to be as transparent as possible and direct artists to do what I honestly feel is going to be most beneficial for them.
We have an amazing team here at Addictive Music Group, and I know everyone says that about their team, but getting to work with Morgan Matthews and Nicholas Shane has been an incredible honor that I am completely grateful for. Together we have achieved seemingly impossible feats in the music industry, from #1 Billboard charting songs to countless features in TV and film. They say you become a combination of the five people you surround yourself with the most, so the importance of having motivated, hard-working people in your life is absolutely essential to achieving success. Coming from an artist career and now working on the business side of things has been an eye-opening experience for me and offered a brand new perspective, and this is just another path on my own personal journey. I’ve known for a while that working with artists was something that I eventually wanted to do, and so I’m very excited for what’s to come as we continue to grow this label and bring on new artists.
