Today we’d like to introduce you to Dayjah Owens.
Hi Dayjah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, I was born in Bryan Texas. I moved to the DFW Area my 9th-grade year of high school. I come from a line of Strong black women who were in the hair industry. My Grandmother was a cosmetologist, my mother was a cosmetologist & my father went to Barber school. I really didn’t want to be in the hair industry to be quite honest. I’ve always known how to do hair. Once I had my son, I was working at FedEx delivering packages but I didn’t like being away from my son & the job wasn’t as flexible as I wanted it to be. I was missing out on so much with him just being a baby because I was working all day 6 days a week. So, I decided that I would go to cosmetology school at Ogle Fort Worth. While in school the birth of “Egyptian Goddess Hair and Beauty” was born. I started out making candles, body scrubs, & body oil. While at school I ran into some financial problems. Which meant that I had to withdraw. I started a job I didn’t like that didn’t pay anything. So, a friend came to me and asked if I knew how to do locs. I told her no but she insisted. So, I researched a lot. THEN BOOM I started retwisting my friend’s Locs. So, I just put in an application at a natural hair salon called Loc Star in Arlington Texas. From there I took off with being a Loctician. I even went back to Cosmetology school. When Covid hit my life changed. I went back to work for a couple of months. Then I took a leap of faith and went on my own as a Loctician. From there I started working on my own product line for locs. All Natural All Organic products. It wasn’t easy trying to get 3 products together at one time. Shortly after spreading my wings from the salon; I Graduated from Cosmetology. With a business of my own working for myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been easy at all. People don’t see the mental stress that Entrepreneurs go through when running these companies. Yes, we get the freedom to make our own schedules but just the company alone; you are doing everything. Trying to make deadlines, stay on top of the new trends, etc. Then, for myself; I had to withdraw out of school & then with Covid. I’m also a full-time mother. A hands-on mom. I don’t miss a beat when it comes to my son. I’m so big on self-care now more than ever because for a while I forgot about myself. You get so caught up in work, being a parent, & other things the last thing that was on my mind was myself. What changed was my grandmother. I was venting to her crying one day and she told me ”Baby girl, how can you be the best for other people & for your son when you aren’t your best for yourself?” I had to leave my suite; I ended up at home. I took a huge hit with that; but after a few months I was back in a shop. In this industry. Well, really in life you can’t stay down for long. You have to rewrite the plan, while still playing the game. But when you come back you come back harder than you did before. I’m a fighter. I have been my whole life. Also, I have my son. I want to be the example for him but also show him to never give up on anything so easy. Nothing in life came to me easy. I’ve always had to work for whatever I have.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Artist. I love to paint. I write music. I can sing. I specialize in being me. Which makes me a great a Loctician. Locs is art to me. Hair is art to me. You can style them, color them, twist them; in so many different ways. Every loc is unique. One loc may look different than the other. So, with my work I love being different. My work is different. I go based on the client’s face shape, loc size, lifestyle, ect. I’m very huge on healthy hair & a healthy scalp. It’s all about making sure my client walks out not only loving their hair but feeling great & confident when they walk out my door. I don’t want to be the same as the next person. I am uniquely me. There’s only one Dayjah Owens in the world. Trust me I looked it up lol.
Any big plans?
I’ve been in the hair industry for 3 years. I’ve accomplished so much in just that time. I have so much in store for myself. The best way I can answer this honestly is just to keep watching. I’m not done, this is just the beginning of my beautiful life at the age of 26 years young.
